My biggest gripe is their attitude. These folks seemingly hold the customer in complete contempt. It sounds and looks more like a backroom numismatic sweatshop, which one can get away with working in the anonymity of the internet. If these people had a valid storefront they would have been out of business long ago.
I can't see what I'm buying, or contemplating to buy, especially in higher grade, low mintage unslabbed pieces?
I'm supposed to take a snarky, cursing and insulting dealer's word, and a B -rated (Better Business Bureau is one of the biggest scams in the world for lesser businesses trying to "buy" credibility) dealers word at that?

Everything about these jokers sent up red flags to STAY AWAY...if they disrespect and think so little of me this much "in person" I can't imagine how they would treat me as a phone-in or 'net customer. Good thing is...I'll never find out. :)

I see that the ACE/MVCC hasn't changed. They were the same way 15 years ago. I'm surprised they're still in business.

Problem is, when your criteria is based only on price and cheapness, all too often you get what you paid for, you increase your chances of being "taken", often selling cheap = selling cr*p...BY cr*p. I think the clerk described himself right on the money; those were his exact words and quote, not mine. I was floored.
On eBay (which I'm not fond but do have an acct) at least you have a shot at a pic of the actual coin and positive customer dealer ratings.
Google Mt. Vernon Coin Company for ratings or reviews and complaints and you find stuff like this...

And BTW, this shop is nowhere near Mt. Vernon Virginia or Maryland Baltimore City area of Mt. Vernon; it's in Annapolis so even the name can be misleading.

Where can I find a listing of reputable internet dealers for coins in the vf to au grades? Normally most internet dealers are either high grade / high price or like Mount Vernon. EBay is fine but it is too easy to misjudge a coin by a picture.

Yes it is True what you written here.. I live in Annapolis I never bought any item on on them because of my bad experiences when I visit their store. BAD Customer Service.

I would also like to know as I'm re entering the hobby after a hiatus and have collecting gaps to fill. Of the 8 coins on my list, 7 were described on their website as "Gem Brilliant" including the proofs. What 4 were briefly shown me weren't by any stretch of the imagination "Brilliant". Makes me wonder if the one that WAS closest to Brilliant really was a proof. If I had ordered these online my reaction upon opening the delivery would be WTF is this? No wonder they don't like in-store sales/order pickup; their cover stands a greater chance of being blown and you get to see behind the curtain.

So yes, anyone have any sites for coin dealer ratings, reviews, experiences? I like to hear the good and bad...every shop has a bad day and mistakes can happen. Constructive critique is beneficial to shops that want to improve and build a loyal customer base.

Wow Chris, you aren't kidding. This old web site lists Mount Vernon Coin Company on their Numismatic Death Penalty page...and with a black star for undeserving of anyone's business.

Man, looking at the Death Penalty page sure brought up an oldie, Ramapo. Anyone else deal with these losers? Man, placed an order for a "red BU large cent" in the mid 90's, and got sent a horribly scrubbed coin that USED to be a problem VF before they got a hold of it. It was red, that was the only thing that was not a lie. They got so bad that Coinworld would only allow them to list bulk wheat cents for sale in their paper, as every other deal they would list was a straight out lie.

I've ordered from them 3 - 4 times and was happy with the items. Took a little over a week each time, but I've had that happen with other bigger online vendors also. I'll order from them again, just not often.

    fool me once....

Despite reading some other horrible reviews of this company I decided to buy some coins...(yeah I know...I should have known)
Ordered some barber coinage totalling several hundred dollars.
nearly 3 weeks after my order I received a priority small flat rate box. Upon opening the box I found nothing but some papers. No coins! Examining the box there was nothing sealing the flaps. Yep, these guys shipped silver coins without taping or gluing the flaps shut.
I notified them of the issue and shipped the packaging back to them so they could file an insurance claim. A few days passed after tracking showed delivery without any response from them. Upon contacting them and asking for my money back they told me I need to file the insurance claim. At this point they had the packaging, they were the contractor with the shipper and the holder of the insurance receipt. Therefore any insurance due would most likely go to them and not me.
I told them that I contracted with them to deliver coins which they failed to do. They contracted with the USPS to get them to me. The insurance was to protect them.
They refused to refund. So I filed a chargeback and notified the BBB.
In responding to the complaint to the BBB they lied and stated I did not return the packaging, something they never called into question before. Then they had the nerve to slander me and call me a fraud.
So in short....these people have no integrity, no honesty and do not feel they are responsible for the safe delivery of the items. read the other reviews online and don't make the mistake I did! AVOID these scammers.

Yea, stay away from these guys. I bought a 1921 Peace Dollar Choice AU (supposedly) from them almost a year ago and the first one I got was XF-40 at BEST but that was not taking into account the HUGE rim ding at 2-3pm on the obverse. If it had been sold to me as a net VF-30 I would've been more than happy. Anyways, instead of getting a refund, I asked them for an appropriate replacement. Bad move. Well, this was when I knew nothing much about cleaned coins and what to look for, so the one I get looks AU, has a great strike and is nice and shiny. Then, after my return privilege of only 7 days expires do I realize that I'd been had and I keep it as a reminder of how not to spend $165. So the coin I have now could rightly be graded AU details, but not a Choice AU problem-free peace dollar that it was advertised to be and that I was reassured over the phone that I'd be receiving.

Also, I ordered a 20th anniversary ASE set from them before the peace dollar fiasco, and they charged me twice for it. The set was purchased through layaway so I obviously didn't have enough to afford two sets. At the time of fulfillment, the layaway and the shipping departments must've gotten something confused and charged me my final layaway payment but then also charged me as if I was buying it outright at the same time. So they drained my bank account of about $350 I didn't have, and thankfully I had enough emergency cash to cover it because it took them about a week to credit my money back. That could be understood as a mistake though at best. The peace dollar nonsense is why I will never buy from them again, unless they start selling silver below spot or something.

I have been a customer of their's for about two years.Their prices are reasonable and free shipping on orders $100 or over.Usually receive within a week or so.i have no complaints about their grading although I find it curious that most offered coins are either 'good' or 'uncirculated' and rarely anything in between.

I know this place well enough to know what to buy and not buy. Things said by members are true, good and bad. However, I've been going there so long on and off, that I know what I'm buying is problem free. Also the owners nephew's know me now, since my longevity as a customer, i buy graded IF I buy any pre 1950 coin. However, over the last couple years I usually buy the ATB silver quarters and State silver quarters for now.
If I want to sift through a dealers inventory of stuff, Common Cents Coins usually let's you do that, at least the owner lets me when I go to his shop. ACE and MVCC will not let you do that.

Mount Vernon coin shop Annapolis Md.
Is a joke......as a long time resident of the area I don't know how they stay in business .
If any members here are looking for coins in the Maryland , Delaware , Pennsylvania , Virginia areas please feel free to pm me.
I work quite a few coin shows and would be more than willing to introduce you to dealers in this area who I would personally endorse.
Also give you information on near by shows .
When you deal with dealers who are seen mostly on the net buyer beware . As well of the shop this thread applies to. IMHO
