Well, couldn't resist pulling the trigger again on a coin I hope is another sleeper in the wild, mean, and nasty fleaBay world and another grand slam out of the park, or a bust. I can't stop "gambling" online. I do not have in hand yet, bought this weekend and hasn't shipped yet. I'm really anxious to see this up close and personal. It has a lot of potential. Of course, these are sellers photos. I hope I'm not disappointed if and when it arrives. It's a very common date and mint, appears to be in not so common condition for that though.

Ooh, jealous. I'm looking for a nice Machin's for my set.

Your coin looks like Vlack 23-88A, R-2, struck in 1788 at Machin's Mills. For those not familiar with these, not all coins attributed as "Machin's Mills" were actually struck at that coinage site. Not an expert on these, just comparing to the examples in The History and Coinage of Machin's Mills, 2nd Edition. This is an excellent reference on this series and is interesting in it's own right even if you're not into the series.

This is a relatively recent purchase and is definitely one of my favorites. Plus I got it for about 65% of my maximum bid (thanks Heritage!) which also pleased me. Not a high grade but it's a New York Excelsior, of which there are maybe 15 or so in existence.

Nice pick up. It would be one of my favorites too if it was in my collection.

Just got this released from lay-a-way. PR-60 BN, J-341 Half Dollar Pattern.
Photo credit to Heritage and their archives. This particular pattern last crossed the auction block in 2004.
