Glad you got your gold. perhaps when you deal with a new dealer in the future you should make a minimal purchase the first time and see what happens. It stinks when you feel you are getting burned like that.

    Silver Scam

I too have been scammed by Gaithersburg Exchange, my shipment delayed, and spoke to rudely on the phone AFTER placing an order for several hundred ounces of silver bullion. I realize now that I should have done a "test run" of their service before deciding to give them so much business, but they came strongly recommended by someone I trusted.

I will post my experience in a new post. If anyone who reads this post would care to respond or give advice, I would greatly appreciate it.

I simply cannot believe a legitimate business would treat their customers in this fashion. I am contacting the Maryland Attorney General tomorrow to file a complaint. Maybe they treat their local customers good, but my experience has been the worst I've ever experienced, BAR-NONE.

Great experiences with Gaithersburg Coin Exchange

I'm sorry to hear that someone had a poor experience with gaithersburg Coin Exchange (GCE). I've been one of their customers for over 15 years, and have always had good to great experiences.

I admit that there have been times when I called and Bob was busy and a bit short on the phone, but I've always had experiences when he patiently answered many questions and was extremely cordial. The latter far outweighed the former.

Moreover, I always got great service, and have never been disappointed with the coins I've received. About 90% of my order were over the phone, and I had teh opportunity to visit the store about a half-dozen times.

I typically sent in personal checks, knowing that there would be a three week delay to get the order filled. However, whenever I sent in a certified check, my orders were filled promptly.

I have never experienced a wait with a certified check. My bank was in Virginia, not far from the GCE offices, so maybe that helped.

In the end, what I appreciated was getting exactly what I ordered, at a great price. GCE has consistently given me the best value for my money, and that was worth the occasional curt response from Bob when he was really busy.

I am not related and not a friend of Bob's, but a lifelong collector (about 40 years) who knows good value. GCE always delivered the best value for whatever I was buying, and I trust them fully.

Deal with APMEX (www.apmex.com). Clean store, friendly customer service, great selection, good prices. And, no, I don't work for APMEX... I just like dealing with them.

Maybe you should talk to Goldmund??? He seems to trust the business and owner??? After reading these other posts I wouldn't buy a AG modern dime from this business. Good Luck - Sounds like you will need it!

I don't know how anyone could promote their business after reading this thread - I don't know what to say but will add this; The great thing about the Internet is that when a business that deals in large $$$ items starts messing with their customers - the word gets out. I'm glad for you Goldmund that Bob hasn't treated you like he appears to treat others. I can tell you that I trust what RickieB says. Look at his collection - he's no slouch when it comes to customers. Personally I think businesses that treats their customers poorly deserves the business loss the Internet brings their way. Treating a some customers good and the rest poorly does not make a business I would ever risk my rep on or any money on. I think this thread indicates that Bob and the people that work there seem to have communication/other issues that go beyond curt responses and normal business practices.

I call it the way I see it - don't take it personally and welcome to CT - quite the interesting first post... Look forward to hearing more about the approx. 40 years of collecting!

Somehow one wonders that a lot of the advertisers, but not all, of CoinWorld are of a similar flavour when it comes to rudeness and filthy business locations.

Looking for an attorney in Maryland.

I am sorry you had the bad experience.

I am in the middle of similar experience with Gaithersburg Coin Exchange and their owner, Marc. I am looking for an attorney in Maryland with background in rules and regulations regarding coins dealings and dealers.

I got scammed with this company. I will be filling a complaint with Maryland AG, contacting FBI local office to start. They got hold of a wire I send to buy gold and sold me junk silver which I know nothing about.

They are in voilations of many federal laws. it all takes is finding the right attorney/organization and they will be shut down for good.

I am trying to find a resolution. Till then, I will be on the internet spreading the word about this company while it is still in business.

Ripped off by Gaithersburg Coin Exchange

9/17 placed order to buy gold maple coins. gold was 840...

GCE issued invoice..discussed with mark watts, the owner, payment terms that they will accept a check and I will deposit it in their bank locally...went thru the trouble/cost of getting the check expedited, express delivery. A day later, I received the cashier check and went to their bank to deposit it. bank says they need GCE to endorse check. Had Mark on conference call with BofA manager to tell them to accept the check but no success. Discussed with mark that I will mail check same day delivery and he agreed. Gold that day was much higher. few minutes later, mark called to tell me he cancelled my order.

Had to place same order and had to pay about $20,000 more because marc watts and Gaithersburg Coin Exchange would not honor their agreement.

I recently did an order with them, and though I had good success with them in the past, I'm a little concerned with the changes in promptness, etc.. I did a wire and still had to wait a week for the coins to be shipped and they weren't rolls of 1950's Franklins etc. as agreed but all 1964 Kennedys. At least they look BU.

Anyone know what BU Kennedys are worth? Is it just the CDN BU price, i.e. a slight premium over circulated coins?

Their prices are pretty good, but their service is scarily erratic: sometimes polite and efficient, sometimes humorless and mean. But one thing is clear: You're always waiting on them; they're never waiting on you. A little competition in the area from a less truculent staff would close them down pretty quickly I think.

    Running a Good Business

The confusing or shocking thing regarding businesses that have built a reputation is, why aren't they making necessary improvements to satisfy the customer? And I'm not talking about this business, but businesses in general. The internet has created an information explosion, for good and for bad. If people are polite and respectful this information can be useful. With all the people out of work, how long would it take to have an out of work professional to help this business come up to speed on current customer quality standards? Not very long. Hope springs eternal. With the money being made during this bull run, why aren't the coin titans making necessary adjustments? This is just mind-boggling.

Dealt with Mark Watts in the 1970s and 80s when I was living in Washington. Always found him fair to deal with. Prices were very competitive. Businesslike but not chummy. I always paid cash and dealt in sovereigns which he was happy to move. A friend in NJ does big business with him over the years, still does and is satisfied. So there is another side to the argument.

not as good as they were

manners there getting bad. wait sometimes / 1 till 2 hours. prices pretty good but they change after locking in because they say some mistake was made. $60.00 over spot on each one oz 999 gold coin when i bought over 30 coins. over 5 week wait for delivery when bank check clear in less then one week. prices really change on their jewlery buying, makes me wonder if they have integrity.
wish they were better like they use to be, but still they r better then most other dealers around.
just make sure u r educated in what you want want to by or sell.
and as far as they push you to buy what u do not want, that is not true. no one should buy what they do not want.
just make sure u know what u r doing, so they can give u prices that r fair.
    buyer be ware.
