About a year ago my local coin shop had one of the 5 kopeks and they wanted $75 for it. Maybe that date was especially high, but it was too much for me. I need to check on eBay and see how it's going on there, because sometimes you can get coins cheaper. Although Russian coins seem pretty popular.
Argentine Copper Coinage Yes I see what you mean about the similarity in the design of the portrait on the Dos Centavos and very early American bronze coinage. I find the Argentinian coins, not just this type, to be beautiful. I have quite a few later 10 and 20 Argentine centavos from the 1920s - the 1940s, they have the same obverse portrait as the 1890 Dos Centavos, and I also have some more modern pesos etc. It sounds like you have a nice collection of these beautiful Bronzes Hiddendragon, very cool. I hope to get more myself, at least one without residue on it. I live very close to the United States of America/Estados Unidos Mexicanos border, and we get alot of nice Central and South American coins at the coin shop I frequent, they often have great stuff, in fact I found this 1890 Argentine Dos Centavos in their 5 for a dollar bin, along with some other unbelievably amazing stuff over the years. Straits Settlements coins are great, I'd love to see them. Also I don't think you would be 'dominating the thread with your pics' as long as you stay on the topic.... plus, didn't you start this thread? ~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~ Anyhow here are some pictures of my Argentina 1890 Dos Centavos (first three pics), note the residue.... shame too, since the obverse portrait is quite nice, the reverse less so..... I also include a pic of a more modern Argentina '1860 - 1960' Un Peso (fourth picture), which has a beautiful design in my opinion. The final picture is of the obverses of three Argentine coins from the 1960s (make sure you click the picture and get it fullsize in it's own screen, it is big and shows them all well), including the 1960 Un Peso from the picture above, as well as a 1963 5 Pesos, the one in the middle with the ship on it, and a 1964 10 Pesos, the one to the far right with the cowboy on horseback.... all three of which I find to be beautiful designs. They were given to me by a man I worked for who traveled the world, so I am fairly sure he got them in Argentine around the dates on them.
It's big but not the biggest. the 97 2 pence weighed 2 oz. In 1813 there was a workhouse sixpence token struck in copper that weighed 5 oz. And Russia issued the largest round copper coin a copper ruble in 1770 and 1771. 76 mm in diameter, 28 mm thick and weighed 1030 grams or 36.5 oz Then there is the Swedish and Russian plate money coins the largest of which was the Swedish 10 Dalar that weighed 49 pounds.
Wow!!! Conder101 that is a breathtaking coin, and not only for it's size... I love the design, and the edge lettering. 36.5 oz, wow, that is over a Kilogram, very impressive! ------------------------------------------- *~*Conder101, the Swedish 10 Dalar you mentioned..... it weighs 49 POUNDS? Are you sure you didn't mean 49 Ounces? *~*
Hey 100Mon, I am interested in the Maria Theresa thaler. Can you tell me something about the coin and it's value ? PM me if you want, so that we don't change the thread of Big Copper Coins.
These are more the size of a U.S. half dollar or old British penny, but they're still nice. 1811 Russian 2 kopeks 1833 Spanish 8 maravedis 1894 Italian 10 centesimi.
Here's an 1881 Haiti 2 centimes 1884 Sarawak 1 cent 1909 Netherlands Indies 2 1/2 cent. These are also about the size of a half dollar.
I agree that Argentina has some nice coins. I don't specifically seek them out, but anytime I see one at a good price I grab it. I was ignoring South and Central America until recently but I've found they have a lot of nice coins. Your 2 centavos isn't that bad, all things considered. The first one I ever saw had a hole drilled in it. I really liked it but couldn't justify buying the holy coin, so I let it pass. Then I went home and found a better one on eBay.
I'll have to go digging for it, but I have a China 200 cash coin (or is it 500 cash)? The thing is the size of a hockey puck.
I decided I had to go out and get a Russian 5 kopek after posting this thread, and I got it today in the mail. This thing is a monster! It feels like it weighs about a pound. It's very big in diameter and very thick. Here's a picture, with a dollar coin for comparison.
These things are big, but I wouldn't really consider them "coins," and I doubt they circulated much. http://www.cointalk.com/t181480/
I'd like to get some plate money and mount it on a wall display as a piece of art in my living room. If I was looking for an inexpensive example, what would the price range be?
I've never seen them for sale on ebay, but I don't look very often. I imagine you can't find any cheap, however. But you could try. EDIT: Here's an example of a 1/2 Daler that sold for $750, in near MS condition it seems. http://www.georgemanzcoins.com/curious.html
