I am very admittedly not a Morgan guy, however I been around the block enough to know that 1879-CC is a desirable date...... See, I plunder around on a local auction site and this one has come up without much apparent interest. So for the informed Morgan folks among us, where would you place a value on an AG-G 1879-CC Morgan? I was thinking of putting a $150.00 max bid and seeing if it may slip by. 1879 obverse.JPG reverse 1879-cc.JPG

Looks like a VAM 3 with the die chip filled "G" of god.

There is some funkiness around that MM.
If you get it check it for the capped (rusted) die.

Even though it qualifies for the top 100 VAMs, I think your $150. is a max for the condition of that coin. If not for the CC , value should be melt. JMO

Wouldn't those substantial rim dents put it into Details territory? Not a stopper for me, but that's probably making it harder to sell.

I will, as usual, be as helpful and selfless as possible, and with only your interest in my thoughts.

So, my opinion is, if you are successful @ $150.00 U.S., I will immediately pay you $250.00 U.S. for the coin.

Please, no thanks is required. It is just the kind of guy I am.

769,000 were minted and there are 2 varieties. One is a clear CC and the other is a CC over a CC. The clear CC is the harder one to find. It’s obviously well circulated but it has a lot of rim dings. If you put in a $150.00 maximum bid you will probably be on the low side. This coin should be in the $200-$250 price range. Mine is in a little better shape and I paid $250 a few yards ago. Prices are higher now. Best wishes.

Yeah, I figure it would be a details coin.... But that has never stopped me before on more desirable dates/mints. On paper, I have a pretty impressive collection.... Once you look at the labels, not so much.

My $150.00 max bid is in place. Showing up at $60.00 currently. We shall see how this goes.

Here is one of mine with the CC/CC. The subject coin has some issues at the MM.

Randy, I think you are on target to win with this bid, with the wear, dings and dents it is AG3, around $110-120, but you are only a little high at your bid. FMV lists G4 at $155 and NGC is $150. The spread to the next grade is about $40 to $197/VG8, so dropping a grade back to AG3 is in the right ballpark.

I had a 1890CC that was a solid G4 that I gifted to a family member about 4 years ago. Then (and now) it was $110 but had no dents, just straight wear, probably slid across many a poker table out West in them thar days.

You should feel comfortable with your bid…imo…Spark

Despite the wear on the coin in Randy’s opening post it appears to be the over-mint mark variety.
