I think you caught the essence of the coin…mighty fine Morgan. Have you checked the VAMs for it?…Spark Oh yeah…MS64
I looked at the clashed varieties. It is an interesting set of dies. There is more there than meets the eye.
A little chattery in the fields so I have it at MS64. But with that toning though...it's a real stunner. Nice coin!
Here are some of the die markers if someone wants to try and VAM it. The double lip/ wreath clash. The N clash Date position. Profile clash at the wreath. Ribbon Back of the bunn usually looking for the strength of the ST. And the neck and chin clash, this is an early die stage of one of them.
MS 64 to my eye. Morgan's often respond beautifully to these holders and develop really eye appealing toning.
AU55. Sorry but it looks like solid wear above the ear to me. A bit scuffy too. The toning though is beautiful and maybe that will carry it. Your pics are perfect. Crappy pics are what we endured in the publications back in the 70's, or earlier.
I'm in the 64ish camp. Hey, this looks to be a "Far Date" with the clash. Have a look at VAM 9 series, maybe a 9C? Could be 5A? Absolutely gorgeous coin! Great photos as well. 1885-P VAM-9C - VAMWorld (ec2-13-58-222-16.us-east-2.compute.amazonaws.com)
I'm at a MS64+. The hairlines aren't big enough to downgrade it to a 64 in my opinion. Also, for those of you who didn't notice it, it's also worthy to note that there is a die crack between the 5th star to the right of 1885 and the M in Unum.
With the crack at tip of neck to 1st left star and what 1/2 dime mentioned "die crack between the 5th star to the right of 1885 and the M in Unum" I'm pretty confident this is a VAM 9C. Good catch 1/2 dime!
