I actually bought 2 of these 59 Washingtons, consecutive serial numbers, both have marvelous toning and are full of luster. What style of toning is this? What is your grade and what grade did the TPG give. I did not leave a spot in the poll for your grade. You can pick two choices, toning style and the TPG grade. Please leave your grade below.
MS 66 ....looks clean enough for the grade. As far as toning, I would guess album. It does not have the pattern associated with end roll toning plus it is toned on both sides (which is less common to see inside of a roll or anywhere in a roll unless the roll was repackaged). And 1958 was the last year of the cardboard mint sets; by 1959 the coins were in the plastic packaging that didn't generally lead to toning (especially for mint state coins). By the way, is that an NTC holder? The ring makes me think it might be. And if is, I will guess they gave it an MS 67.
The luster is hard to judge from those photos, but you said it is strong so I guessed MS66, the coin seems to have premium gem surfaces. As for the toning, that speckled progression seems much more common on mint sets than albums.
The toning is turning terminal, as in black. Not that there's anything you can do about it, necessarily, but it just is. I gave it 66.
Mottled, not speckled. I go with the old Pistereen PC use of the word "mottled", substituted for ugly. For certain, there are very attractive mottled pieces. There is no set cause...it could be an album, roll toning, envelope storage, etc., or a combination of all. But (there is always a "but"), it is extremely doubtful it is from a Mint Set. Very doubtful. The originality depends on the Luster.
It's original and still quite brilliant in hand. The surfaces look very close to flat pack style toning, so close. The dealer had 4-59's all with the same toning, I bought 2, that I thought met the grade or better.
I give this coin a grade of MS66, it is clean enough to make a 67, if they think that the luster is there.
