Rare 1943 Penny Sells for $1 Million

By Suzan Clarke | ABC News Blogs – 10 hrs ago
    • A.1943 Lincoln penny that soared in value because it was made from the "wrong" material reportedly has sold for $1 million.

[IMG](PCGS)The penny was erroneously made of bronze instead of zinc-coated steel at the San Francisco Mint, according to UPI news agency. Texas Rangers co-chairman Bob R. Simpson bought the coin from Legend Numismatics, a rare coin dealer in Lincroft, N.J.
Professional Coin Grading Service, an organization that evaluates and grades rare coins, certified the penny in question, grading it a 62 on a scale of 1 to 70.
"The Simpson collection now contains the finest known bronze cent from each mint, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Denver, including the unique 1943-D bronze cent that PCGS certified after Legend acquired and sold to him for a record $1.7 million in 2010," Willis said.
The U.S. Mint switched from bronze planchets to zinc-coated steel for cents in 1943 because copper was needed during World War II.
"By error, some bronze planchets made it into the hoppers at all three Mints, were struck and released into circulation. These have become the most famous and valuable of all off-metal errors," PCGS said in a release.

Rich people will buy anything, and pay ridiculous prices on top of it.

If my memory serves correctly, it was bought by the co-owner of the Texas Rangers. You know what that means? It's from some of that gooey Texas Oil money.

That coin was an upgrade for him. If memory serves me correctly, he paid a LOT more for the 1943-D bronze.

Rich people will not buy anything. That is why they are rich and you aren't. Ridiculous is subjective. If you don't have much money, many expenditures may strike you as ridiculous.

Sure, but the 1943-D 1c copper is unique... that one cost $1.7 million. Or 170,000,000 times face value :)

Saw the coin at the Long Beach show as it was on display after grading... very cool to see a million dollar penny!!!!

Which brings up that age old adage of "every penny found gets you closer to a million bucks". Well, whoever found this gem took the fast track to that million dollar quota.

It really depends on the demographic the older millionares who made $$ thru business or climbing corporate ladder are conservative when it comes to spending their money, but the current crop of millionaires mostly 30yr olds who made money thanks to silicon valley or wall street have high ego and very rash when it comes to spending their money.

Umm, not really. Oil did since Simpson founded XTO Energy back in the 80s. This dude was rich before owning the Rangers and he actually bailed the Rangers out from bankruptcy. So, he doesn't need the fans money as I'm sure most of the money generated by the Rangers tickets and merchandise all goes back to paying those overpaid baseball players... ;)
