Which Year to Buy: American Gold Eagle Coins?

I notice on APMEX website the AGE coins are priced differently between the "random year" and "2010" versions, with the latter more expensive, and I wonder if that's because the 2010 coins are newer and so more "shiny" or less "contaminated"?

I actually don't mind paying a small extra to ensure the coins can have a better look and presentation, but how likely it is that the previous years' coins have been well stored and show virtually no aging effect, and the buyer just paid the extra for nothing? And I really don't care about the mintage.

I'd appreciate experienced people's opinion. Thanks!

you are looking for 2010 bullion gold coin. or random year bullion gold coin. 2006w to 2008w fractional american eagle gold coins are for collectors.

  7. If you are looking for low mintage collectable bullion then, as Elaine states, the 2006w to 2008w gold fractional american eagles are the way to go. If you are simply looking to buy gold bullion for investment, then buy the least expensive year. Gold is gold. TC

Thanks for pointing that out. Yes, my question is actually about bullion coins only. I am just curious why they price the new bullion coins higher.

  10. Perhaps the premium they paid on the earlier years was lower than the current year issue. TC

I'm guessing because people will pay it. Apmex only states the 2010 coin is in BU condition which means it could have been one they bought from an individual rather than a new one from the mint. Of course if you got the money, you can get a sealed monster box from them. However if you are buying this quantity of gold, there might be better options.

Unless they specifically state that it is a new coin from the mint, assume that it isn't. An example of this was the 2009 buffalos that came out last Oct. Apmex stated these coins were shipped still sealed in the plastic sheets as they come from the mint.

Right. For example I was buying raw 2005 and 2006 tenth oz. gold eagles for about $75 to $80 four years ago.
Most collectors already have enough of those year coins and don't buy any more. So they sit around on the shelf unsold.
However collectors don't have the 2010 coins yet so they sell better and are in greater demand.
