I'm trying to decide which type of background looks best for coin photos, for my own website as well as for eBay listings. I'm torn between the black background, which I think provides a nice contrast to the coins' color, and a transparent (in this case, white) background, which my web designer friend thinks looks more professional. Any thoughts? I appreciate any and all feedback. format.png

I think I personally prefer the white background for cropped images. Something about the digital black that doesn't work perfectly with the coin's color...

I've heard a neutral gray is best... been meaning to try it.

Really, all depends on the individual coin; black is best for some, while white is preferable for others. As CBD said, a gray or other neutral color may also be used. For ebay, use what is best suited for or makes the coin "pop", but on a website, backgrounds should be uniform.

When I started imaging my coins I used a black background and then switched to white shortly after. I just think it looks better when uploaded here or on eBay because they both have white backgrounds.

I like the black background. I feel it makes the coin 'pop'. The contrast often achieved is nothing short of spectacular.........

I'm for the white. Used to be for the black, but changed after a year. It kinda squeezes the coin IMO.

    C: 60% grey. :p

I just realized you're just asking for the fill color and not the actual background used while imaging the coin. I prefer black for fill color, personally... or blue... or red... and all the other colors I get yelled at for using. ;)

I used to use gray (Windows RGB color 192,192,192) but switched to white (255,255,255).

I prefer a black background. Something about a white background makes it hard for me to see the edges of the coin.

I've always used a black velvet jewelry display board. The soft velvety black looks nice against a shiny coin and the buyer can see that you didn't lay the coin on concrete or something to be photographed. The only downside is that I have to hit it with a lint roller before use.

I've tried them both. Too my color blind eyes the black always seemed to provide a contrast that let's me focus on the details. Sometimes I try both and don't see much difference. I usually crop out the original background since I have seen some pretty ugly ones and they distract from the coin. I have never tried the grey, might do it someday. I do a lot of books for my collections and I like to use black background on black pages or the same with white. It makes the coin float on the page.

I agree with this completely. White is by far the best background to use, in my opinion.

What program is being used to fill the background of the coins and after it's finished what is the average size of the file(s)?
