Got a wheresgeorge.com dollar today in change. Tracked it on their website and it only traveled 16 miles to make it to Elyria from the West side of Cleveland. I had some that traveled over 75 miles. Heres the website for tracking: http://www.wheresgeorge.com/ If you want to stamp your own bills and track them in circulation here's a website for the stamps: http://www.thestampmaker.com/rubber-stamps/stock-stamps/wheres-george-stamps.aspx
@Markus1959 Wouldn't this thread be more appropriate listed in the "Paper Money" forum? All you need to do is click on the "Report" function and ask one of the Mods to move it. Chris
I thought it was a bit ironic because you were one of the few who took the time to respond (at length) in my thread about duplicate threads and the use of the "Report" function. We're all human! Chris
Most of the ones I've had and entered no one else has. It's kinda neat when people do enter them, I had one from NH that I got and entered but nothing after that. I also had one that I got in Brunswick that came from Strongsville and then a year later showed up in Medina. That was kinda neat to see how little it traveled in a couple of years.
Ya'd think the person that stamped it and put it into circulation would have entered it in the tracking data base!
The lady that stamped this one and put it into circulation stated she has stamped 96,000 bills and has return hits of only 16,500. I ordered my stamp - what the hell, something to do. I'd like to send some down to my sister in SC.
I think it's fun to see how far the bills have traveled. I myself have defaced so many 1's by stamping a Bart Simpson purple stamp to let others know that I have had that bill. these bills are not rare and I do not see the harm in doing it. they will print more money.
#8 Is it legal to write on or mark currency? Where's George? does not encourage the defacement of U.S. Currency. The law defines 'illegal' defacement as defacement that renders bills unfit to be re-issued. For the legal details from the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing, please Click Here
No, the only law on the books about this dates to 1994 and states that you must have the "intent" to render currency unfit for circulation. Intent is hugely important with this. Were the government to update the law and omit this single word, it could well mean the end of all U.S.-based currency tracking sites as we know it. I'm not aware of anyone being prosecuted under this law and I'm sure the government has more important things to deal with than going after bill stamping hobbyists, anyway.
Just thought it would be something fun to do - but now I have to remember now a days there is always somebody out there that doesn't like fun and want's to destroy what millions of people actually like!
I can attest to their decline from circulation quite well. Out of 12K in ones that I've handled this year, I've only found two WheresGeorge? bills (one of which was only stamped on the back). Contrast this with the "good old days" from 10 years ago wherein it wasn't uncommon to find an average of 2-3 WG? bills out of every 100 note strap. The precipitous decline in wilds being found or "hit" these days is discussed frequently on the WG? forum. Part of the problem may have to do with the security settings on bill scanners (such as with self-check out machines, electronic drop safes, vending machines, counting and slot machines, etc.) being set higher than they used to be. The theory goes the bills are being rejected and set aside as muted and shipped off to be destroyed. This ties in to Federal Reserve centers possibly recalibrating (updating) their fitness scanning equipment over the last few years and potentially programming them to be more picky about stamps than they used to be. Or it could simply be due to a decline in member participation (or even possibly a combination of the two). As the operator of WG? has said, the site was created in 1998 and people have a lot more online entertainment options these days.
I think it would be fun to send 100 one dollar stamped bills to SC (like I stated in a previous reply) and see if they get back here to Ohio - I doubt it!
I have a stamp that says "Postage Rates Are Too High". Used it a few times on my mail and mail got lost, hmmm... maybe I'll start stamping bills.
