Hello everybody, I am a newbie Spanish coin collector. I will travel for tourism to Scotland in the last week of August. I would like to know whether I could find there any coin fair or any numismatics shop in Scotland (for example, in Edinburgh) so that I can buy some cheap BU coin sets. Thanks in advance. Best regards, Izotz.
I can't recommend any as I've never been to the area, but I wish you luck finding one. I've spent about a month of my life in Europe, and never encountered a coin shop : (
I can only speak about the things I know. I live in Madrid and there are a lot of coin shops in the old part of the city. And on Sunday mornings you can find in "Plaza Mayor" (one of the main squares) a big fair where you can buy cheaper stuff. In fact, I come from Vitoria, a little town (200.000 people) in the Basque country and there is at least one or two coin shops. I don't know where you have been, but I suppose it's a matter of knowing the right place to go in Europe. The thing is that what I have found is that shops are much more expensive than the typical weekly little fairs, so I would like to know where and when I can find one.
hello izotz, and welcome to the forum. Sorry, I can't help with your question either. I imagine there are a few nice coin shops in Scotland, though... So, are you a collector of Spanish coins, or a Spanish coin collector (or both)? I ask, because I primarily collect coins of the Spanish colonies.
First, sorry about my poor English... I am a Spanish coin collector. As I said, I live in Madrid, but I come from Vitoria. My collection is not big, but enough to keep me occupied with it. I like (mainly) euro coins, but I also have some coins from the Kingdom of Spain from King Fernando VI (XVIIth century) to nowadays. As far as I now, none of them belong to the colonies but to Spain itself. Best regards for everybody.
By the way, you have a nice website. I'll bookmark it and have a look tomorrow, that I'll have more spare time than today.
Your English is great. I just wanted to make sure I understood correctly. Thanks for the comment on my website. I'm glad you like it.
izotz, We have a member here,Ian, who lives in Scotland and I'm sure he can give you some information,at least on his area of the country. He is here at least a few times each week.
izotz. Don't worry about your English. I've got degree(s) from college and I have to use spell check for everything. Even the kids in the neighborhood correct me on things I mess up in the English language. The worst part is I was born in the USA and lived here all my life. As to coin shops in other coutries, have you tried the foreign coin forum here? Also, you may want to check out the PCGS web site for foreign coin informatioin. They have about 20,000 members I think. Good luck and keep on coming back here. As a momento of your trip you could always send us all a coin from there.

But at least you have a starting point
Thank you very much. I'll have a look at the foreing coin forum. By now, I think it will be enough for me with those coin dealers posted here. I still will look for some kind of that weekly street market that I was thinking there could be somewhere. It may be a mistake of mine that I think that what is common in my town may be common elsewhere. Of course, I will post some coin when I come back Regards.
This is fine for me. Thank you very much. And thank you very much also for everybody who kindly answered to my question.
I couldn't in all honesty recommend any of the shops that GD has mentioned. I'm not sure that Argyll Coins and Antiques still exists (?) Hamilton's is fairly limited (and pricey). The one in Edinburgh I haven't been to in ages. it was more like Fort Knox than a shop, which is surprising really given the poor level of stock when I was there. AK Campbell's is primarily a jewellery business, Alex buys and sells over the counter, and their `stock' consists of about a hundred or so mixed world coins.... Mind you I have bought a few coins from him...... but not in the past ten years. There is the occasional `coin fair' but these are few and far between and rarely worth the effort going to them. Sorry, no markets of the type you can find in Spain. There is another shop in Edinburgh which is a bit like AK Campbells (ie primarily a jewellers / antiques business but with coins as a side line. They are called Cavanaugh's, and they reside in Cockburn Street, Edinburgh. There is another shop up in Dundee called `Cornucopia', in King Street. They deal in both coins and stamps. `The owner of Cornucopia used to run coin fairs in various locations in Scotland, but they never really attracted enough sellers to be viable for collectors to go along to. I'll try to see if there is anything on the agenda `coin fair' wise in Edinburgh or around these parts that would be worth taking a detour for and get back to you. Ian
THANK YOU very much, Ian! There is nothing like going to the best sources to get the best information. I am afraid I am going to change my question a little bit. In fact, I would be happy if I could get the typical BU set for the current year so that I do not pay an overprice an a jewelry or because of the shipping expenses. For me, it is very expensive to buy, for example, at eBay because of the shipping expenses in such cheap sets. So, if you were a Spanish tourist in Scotland, and you would like to buy a typical coin set as a souvenir... What would you buy for a few pound? Where would you buy it? Nevertheless I may go to the shops you mentioned. Thanks in advance again.
