Hello, My 4 ½ daughter has taken to helping me sort through a bag of wheat pennies that I inherited from my father and I would like try to keep her interest in coin collecting going. As such, I am a looking to purchase a bag of wheat pennies. So I am looking to purchase some "unsearched" wheat penny bags from a reputable place and I am wondering if anybody has any suggestions. I sent an im to budgood a couple of months ago but I did not hear back from him.
There are several places you can buy unsearched wheaties from, including ebay and probably your local coin shop.
I really don't believe in "unsearched" wheat penny bags. Think about it, who in their right mind wouldn't take a few minutes to quickly go through some cents they are selling to see if there is a 1909 vbd or 55 double die in the bag? It's not going to happen, it's a gimmick. Assume that the coins have had the very best picked out and that you might get some semi-key dates and enjoy picking though them.
You might want to either purchase some rolls described as a "good mix" of dates, or just buy a roll or two from each decade (1909-1919, 1920-1929, etc.), then dump them all in a bag, give it a shake, and let her search away. You can usually find common wheats sold by the roll, separated by decade. You could post a message in the Open Forum, or, if you must, check eBay.
Yes, I agree there are no such thing as "unsearch". I bought some of them a long time ago and although their were some nice common dates nothing to indicate they were nothing but searched. But what borgovan said buy some common dates shakem up and let her have the fun.. thats what is all about
THINK! If I told you I had 10 quarters in my pocket but never looked, would you believe me? If I told you I had a pile of Nickels in a bag and they were all Buffalo Nickels but I never looked, would you believe me? Just how would anyone know that a pile or bag or box or whatever are all Wheat Cents if they didn't look? There are constant adds for Unsearched Wheat Cents on the internet. That always amazes me how anyone could fall for that. See they are all wheat cents but I never looked.
I'm sure most, around here anyway, realized there are no "unsearched" wheat bags (note the quotes in the OP). That said here is a link to a place that has decent bags of wheats for around 8 cents per coin. click here Here is another link. here
I've been noticing even unsearched teens and twenties wheat cents. I guess the older ones weigh more and a machine separates them without searching (haha). Just find a good deal (a nickel each or less) and buy them. Then get her some coin folders and she'll love you forever.
Thanks Thanks for the replies. When I put "Unsearched" I was doing to so to indicate So Called unsearched. Somebody at some point in time had to have searched these.
From my experiences, I have found ebay as a great place to get wheat penny deals. I bought close to 7 pounds of wheat pennies for 40$. I have also bought from pennies.com but the lot I got seemed to be cleaned out, there were no keys/semi's. Their prices seem to be a little high but their customer service was very good even when I returned it explaining the reason. I have also tried getting pennies from craigslist but most turn out to be people who think a 100 year old penny is worth a lot of dollars.
Welcome to the forum. As far as getting a hold of budgood you just have to keep trying. It has been said that he is the "King of unsearched bags" so he would be the one to get them from. I have also bought bags from www.pennies.com for my grandkids and they have found some semi-keys. You can also try www.apmex.com. Good Luck and Good Hunting!
