I have always been interested in Coins. being disabled just looking for something to occupy my time. I tried to buy new rolls of coins where I live,(Chillicothe, Illinois) But all the banks give me the same replies that they don’t get new rolls of Coins , they say all the coins they have are customer generated coinage, even my own bank (cefcu)won’t do it for me. I asked them if they could order them for me, and they replied “we don’t do that here“. Probably because I don’t have a big bank account. Any suggestions?
Thank you, you are my first reply, Yes, I do do that when I can my bank even frowns on that, but what I’m looking for our 2022 2023 rolls I would like to get a few of each mint mark of the pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters halves or even a case of new pennies that I can store for five or 10 years or go through them, thank you again and God bless you
@CraigerZ, I would rather look through customer rolls. More fun and the older the better. Just like us when we age. By the way, Welcome to CoinTalk! P.S Maybe someone here can help with your request.
I am lucky my friend works at a bank and she hooks me up with boxes of pennies plus plenty of coin wrappers. I also go to the bank where we have our checking account and get boxes there. What I found out is the banks where we don't have an account will give me boxes as long as I give them paper money and not pennies to exchange. Frankly I would take any wrapped coins because I am so addicted to CRH.
Customer wrapped rolls are are go way to find varieties. Otherwise, if you want new coins, all I can think of is to buy bags or rolls from the US Mint but you’ll not get them at face value. It will cost extra per coin, plus the shipping costs.
Mine are wrapped by the security company the bank uses. I have gotten dimes, wood penny, foreign, Canada and lots of copper and of course those horrible zinc pennies.
Welcome! If you are on a budget then nickels and cents are the way to go. More to look through and more varieties to find. You’ll have success with brinks wrapped coins or customer wrapped coins. I lean towards customer wrapped since you avoid the occasional new brick of cents or nickels. Buy your own coin wrappers online. They cost a fraction of a cent when you buy in bulk. I buy by the box. Just a few dollars for a few hundred wrappers. Be the least of a burden you can be if your CU or bank is already least enthused. Schedule your pick ups and drop offs. This helps them plan. With a little work you might start to win them over. Good luck.
I personally would look to form a relationship with the manager. I find credit unions much easier to deal with than banks, so you may wish to consider moving your account and letting your current bank manager know why.
Banks that service commercial areas go through a lot of rolled coins and banks that are in residential areas take in a lot of rolled coins. If you have the ability to locate and travel to a branch of your bank in a commercial district and talk to the manager about what you want to do (and keep it within reason especially at first) they can be pretty accommodating, but the residential banks almost never have to order in coins. If you are looking for specific rolls like 2023 or the newest year, once you establish the relationship with the manager generally they can be helpful and set aside what you are looking for. Before the pandemic I had that set up but my guy got bounced around from branch to branch and that doesn't work anymore for me, but once you are established, my guy would even call me when he had something and I'd call him when I wanted him to get me something. Ordering in coins can take up to 10 days+ depending on the day they place the order so there's a decent delay sometimes. Just requires being friendly, patient and taking no for an answer without losing your cool. No today is yes next month once you been in a couple times and they get used to you. If you just can't, all you can really do is take the customer wrapped coins. Don't bother with halves unless the manager brings it up. It's a big red flag for them and a monster headache for them to get them for you, and then return them when you are done, people ruined it and the good silver is pretty gone from those nowadays. Saying half dollars at the beginning will usually get you shut down immediately. It's for a few months later, and just ask if anyone turned in any at first and work your way up. Generally if they give you half dollars they will never want to see them again. And that's my other point, don't return coins to the same place you are getting them from. They will figure out the pattern and not want to deal with you unless you have a strong relationship set up and they know what you are doing, they won't want to keep doing the out and in over and over and say "why does this guy take coins and bring them back a few days later?" Any bank will usually give you two rolls of quarters for a $20 without blinking, with or without an account. I just ask if I could have two rolls or quarters in change for laundry.
