What is the best coin magazine or the most popular? I bouhgt an issue of Coinage it was good but not as many ads as I thought, the articles were interesting.
I like the mintage page of numismatic news. coinworld has a bunch of ads if you like that. of the magazines coinage is ok.
I have found the best to be the ANA's publication, The Numismatist. For publications about US coins, I've also read a handfull of issues of CoinAge, Coins, and Coin Values. I find both worry too much about how much you can sell it for, and not enough about history. Of those three, Coins is my favorite. I will routinely pick up Coins and CoinAge when I get to the book store (not often enough) but I don't get Coin Values unless there is an article I really want to read. I've only got two issues. For world coins, I read and subscribe to WorldWide Coins, an Amos publication (I got my first issue in the mail this past week!) My one complaint is that there is not enough to it. I read it from cover to cover (including ads) and it leaves me wanting more. For Paper money, the SPMC's publication is top-notch. I just joined the club, and got my membership card in the mail two days ago. Looking forward to getting the magazine I was given some older issues which I also read cover to cover, it's great stuff...very indepth and history detail oriented, which is what I like. I also read Paper Money Values from time to time. The articles in there I find to be a lot better then Coin Values. But only one shop locally stocks it so I don't get it often. I think I have three issues. The SPMC publication is better, however. Hope my opinions are of some use to you. EDIT: I've never seen Coin World or Numismatic News in person. I won't subscribe to a magazine unless I can see it beforehand and be sure I like it. (My main source of numismatic publications is Borders and Barnes & Noble) Maybe I will be able to peruse a copy at CoinFest in CT in October...
Coin World is the biggest seller by far, outstripping all of the others by at least 3 to 1. As for which ones are the best - it's the ones you'll actually read.
Coin World is a weekly and not only has lots of articles and ads, but also once a month you get Coin Values which includes retail pricing for almost all US coins PLUS some REALLY significant articles.
I like COINS. The articles and letters are quite interesting as they get into the historical view of types/varieties.
.......no votes for numismatic news? i think they're good. i read all that were mentioned and i think the ANA mag is VERY GOOD!
When I collected coins, it was coin world for me...but I would look at all the others and if an article was interesting..well I would get a copy. RickieB
I subscribed to COINS for many years, and would tear out articles and file them by demomination. As a result I have literally hundreds of articles archived readily available for research. Now that I have refocused on copper, I need to decide what to do with all the other articles. Anybody think they might make good prizes in contests?
Now that I think about it I may subscribe to coinworld, I really used to like CW (anyone know where to get a good deal on the price?)
I agree with Doug on this one. I have subscribed to them all. I was getting in 7 different publications at one time. Some were weekly and some where monthly. After several years of deciding which is the best, I have canceled all my subscriptions except to 3 publications and I am about to cancel one more. I think Coin World by far is going to be the best publication for US coins out there. It is weekly and they have all the most up to date info available. A subscription will cost you a tad over $40 per year. For a few dollars more ($49) you can also get their monthly price guide. Or if you are a little more cost conscious, you can pay $10 a month and have full access to the same publication on line. I get the Numismatist because I am a member of the ANA. I understand with the new membership prices, you can also save a few dollars and subscribe to this on line. A yearly membership in the ANA will now run you I believe a tad over $40 a year as well. I like Numismatic news too, but once my subscription runs out in December that will be it. I like it, but 90% of the info in it you can find in Coin World as well. There is a slim chance I may resubscribe because I just got an email notice for ANA members that a yearly subscription is now $25 vs. $40, so I may resubscribe because the price is reasonable. So that is my 2 cents worth. Hope it helps.
I subscribe to Numismatic News, CoinWorld and CoinValues which you get when you payextra to Coinworld. I have also bought issues of Coinage many times. I like all of them. But I agree that Coinworld is the best. It is also worth it to pay the extra to get one Coinvalues with it once a month. The prices are crazy high, so don't use it for that, but it has great articles too.
