I want YOUR STRICT DEFINITION of a counterfeit ONLY:

    A counterfeit is:

I don't want to read  your  BLAB :yack::yack: that just wastes space in this thread. Let's see who understands a simple request in English and who does not. Later, we can discuss the definitions. Feel free to COPY a definition from any source but credit the source. I'd also be interested in "home-made" definitions. Remember, A DEFINITION IS SHORT AND SWEET and covers everything!

Here is one from The Macmillan Encyclopedic Dictionary of Numismatics.

COUNTERFEIT: "To create false money for private gain by immediate circulation."

Creating an unauthorized copy of a genuine coin or bank note for the purposes of defrauding or illicitly profiting from said copy.

This term is also commonly applied to non-currency items such as purses, watches, etc. In this case, Merriam-Webster offers this definition.

A counterfeit is created to defraud the public by placing bogus monetary value on something without value and is defined by criminal intent.

My definition of a counterfeit (noun) is a fake coin or piece of currency designed to deceive an unknowing party into thinking it's genuine.

I did not look anything up...this is just what I have always personally defined it to mean.

Something that purports to be something that it is not.

    Sufficiently short and universal?

A counterfeit is what @Insider says it to be because he is an expert on the subject. Sorry, all the rest above pretty much cover it and I could not come up with anything better.;)

Having strong convictions about something isn't a bad thing. I enjoy someone with strong convictions...especially when we disagree. Frequently they are fun to debate (argue) with.

My definition is what ever the government's definition and interpretation is.
After all, that is what really counts in this matter.

Nope, my :grumpy: question was why do folks do it? It has been answered. I need to get over it :hungover: and they like to socialize.

 Actually, that is not YOUR definition. Do you care to post the government's definition that YOU FOLLOW?

Is this thread somehow linked to another thread you started. I do agree with everyone who's post included intent to deceive and fraudulent...

    FROM WIKIPEDIA
To counterfeit means to imitate something authentic, with the intent to steal, destroy, or replace the original, for use in illegal transactions, or otherwise to deceive individuals into believing that the fake is of equal or greater value than the real thing.

    A counterfeit is:
    1. as an adjective -- made in exact imitation of something valuable or important with the intention to deceive or defraud
    2. as a noun -- a fraudulent imitation of something else; a forgery

I disagree partially with #1; in that the object may not necessarily have been made to deceive or defraud

I'd have to disagree with "made in exact imitation...". If they were all exact, we would not be able to tell they were counterfeit.

A counterfeit is....a fake. Intended to pass as something of value, intended to defraud for monetary gain. My definition.

Is this your definition or is it taken from a source?

This is not a definition, it is an opinion of a post. Please insert your opinion :cigar:again much later in the thread AFTER WE START DISCUSSING ALL THE DEFINITIONS OTHERS HAVE POSTED who followed my original request. Thanks. ;)
