    What does the S mean

      hello everyone,
So this is my first post on the internet ever so please bare with me as I try to get to the point.... recently I purchase a group of NGC graded Morgan silver dollars one of these coins appeared to be an 1896-S judging by the title of the grade package however upon closer inspection of the coin it quickly became apparent that something was missing “there was no mint mark” okay well no mark on a Morgan means that it was minted in Philadelphia right? But that would mean the NGC made a mistake wow that would have been significant and the price difference between the two coins also pretty big about $3900 between a MS63 1896-S and an MS63 no mark. Okay I have looked the coin up on NGC’s site. They ID the coin correctly so what’s with the S right before the dollar sign on the package what does it mean. ( S$1 on the grade package) can anyone answer this question for me please I can try to post pics if needed

Good question Mike. Welcome to CT. You are not the first person to ask what the S is for.

Welcome to CT, Mike. Yeah, the TPGs sometimes use pretty austere abbreviations. Those labels are small, so I guess they need to leave room for things that can't be so easily abbreviated, like variety descriptions, etc.
