There is a thread over at the PCGS Collectors Universe Forum asking people what they think of Coin Talk. Here is the link: http://forums.collectors.com/messageview.cfm?catid=26&threadid=861515&STARTPAGE=1 I thought it would be interesting to start our own opinion thread about that site. I will start. I visit both multiple times daily and enjoy it. Both have very knowledgeable numismatists and much can be gained from both. My preference is CT as there is a nice mix of both new and experienced collectors. :smile TC What do you think about the PCGS Collectors Universe Forum?
I think that the level of experience and knowledge is much greater over at the CU forum. Tougher crowd, too.
I have visited there but never joined. As a lurker, I found it extremely PCGS chauvinistic (despite the fact that 90% of my collection is PCGS and always has been), I like some debate on that. I didn't join as it seemed a far less comfortable place. Likewise, I never joined the NGC forum, as I am NOT an avid NGC purchaser, and felt that I didn't have much to say about their goods--I do buy NGC coins, but not as first choice. This place felt just right, in terms of friendliness and informative value.
Respect it? Why? I respect no censorship save anti-harrassment or vulgarity. Those are only used to make the discussion civil. I truly reprehend any censorship of content whatever the context. Yes, legally they have the RIGHT to do so since its a private board, and I respect their RIGHT to do so, but I have absolutely no interest in participating in such a board that has such reprehensible policies. They can call us "bush league" all they wish, they are the kool aid drinkers who like to pat themselves on the back and congratulate themselves on how smart they are that all of them need their hands held, (for a fee), for a HOBBY. Btw, not to slam members there. There are a lot of very knowledgable people on that board, and I learn from reading some of the posts. I, (as if someone would call me an expert in something), just have no interest in joining a censored board. Who knows what other things are censored?
Lol, sorry man. That is the problem with the internet, sometimes its hard to pick up on things like that.
I've lurked over there for years but only posted I think twice. They claim there are a lot of "percieved experts" here, but I find that to be more the case there than any other forum I've ever visited. Not to mention the arrogant attitude that accompanies nearly every post. And, like was mentioned, say anything that could possiby be construed as a negativity in any way about PCGS and you're banned forever. Sounds fun. Guy
I lurked there for about a year. I joined in Aug 2011. I have posted maybe 30-40 times since then. I like to read the posts there, but don't contribute much otherwise. It is what it is. I do frequent the NGC boards, where censorship is basically nil.
Oh I think you have many, many experts here. In this forum, you will get a wide range of opinions and biases, from raw coin enthusiasts to PCGS loyalists, and everything in between. That is what is so nice about this place.
Never been over to the pcgs boards or anyother boards. Don't feel the need to. I find most of what I need on here. Cody
I am an avid reader of the CU boards but have only posted a few times. I do think you have more specialists posting on the CU forum and there is a lot lessof the basic questions that usually fill up this forum, but I enjoy posting here more than any other forum I am on.
I post on several coin messageboards, including CU. I enjoy all them all. All the boards I post on have their strengths and weaknesses. I have made good e-friends on all of them as well. One of the main things I like about CU is their U.S. section. I enjoy it moreso then here, for the reason stated, less newbie question threads. I have also found some questions I had regarding Die states on some of my u.s. coins more thorough then on here when I asked years ago. The other positive on CU is their buy/sell/trade section. Its very active and there is many good deals to be found. I also have had more success selling off some coins there then on here. The negatives with CU is the world/ancient section is not very active. I find it pretty annoying. At least the world/ancient forum here is more active. The #1 reason I started posting on CT then CU when I got back into coin collecting was the closer knit/family atmosphere. You quickly get to know who is who around here and what they like/dislike. CU is just too large and it can take years as well as ALOT of posting to maybe get the regulars to know who you are.
There is no denying that some of the foremost experts (real experts) in the world post on the PCGS forum. Some post on the NGC forum as well. I have no problem with any of them in discussions. What I do have a problem with is people who think they are experts or very knowledgeable - when they are not. And that board has a lot of those. Don't get me wrong, I have no problem at all with anybody just because they disagree with me on a given point. People disagree with me rather often on CT as anyone should know. But I still consider those people (most of them anyway) as friends and respect them greatly. I considered more than a few of them as friends before CT even existed. I met many of them on both on the NGC and PCGS forums. I can't say that about some of those on the PCGS board. And I hate the fact that management there will ban people for simply stating the truth.
Well some of us are just too stupid to know when we are wrong. Seriously, though, this is what I love about CT. We have some extremely knowledgable people who are willing to be disagreed with. I know its frustrating when someone who obviously does not know what they are talking about disagrees vehemently, but these experts here really do try to educate them. This is a fairly rare thing on most boards. On most boards the few experts will get a following, and anyone daring to disagree with that expert will simply get pummeled and berated if they speak up. This is what I dislike about many other boards, getting "shouted down" if you do not agree with the prevailing opinion. On the PCGS board, the main prevailing opinion, which if you do not share you will be removed, is PCGS slabbing is the only slabbing worthy of your money. I wonder how long someone like me, who questions the need for slabbing to begin with, would last over there. Anyone have an over/under? 2 hours? 3?
