what are the key dates because i bought a load of wheaties of ebay (Ed Zac should know this) and i want to see if i have any
1909-S VDB 1909-S semi key 1914-D 1922- Plain 1931-S semi key Other tougher dates: 1910-S 1911-S 1912-S 1914-S 1922-D 1924-D 1944-D/S 1946-S/D
Key dates: 1909-S, 1909-S VDB (with the initials "V.D.B." in small print at the bottom of the reverse), 1914-D, 1931-S. Also there is the 1922-D with no D, sometimes called "1922 Plain". Semi-keys include all "S" mint coins from 1910-S to 1915-S (inclusive) and 1924-D. Most other dates are relatively cheap (no more than $3-5, at most, when well circulated) but there are a few others, mostly branch mint coins before 1934, that are better dates in grades above VF. There are a few other dates that are a bit better in all grades, such as 1921-S, 1922-D, 1923-S, 1926-S, 1931-D and all 1932 and 1933 coins. Nothing after 1933 really qualifies as a scarce date, though again some of them can be very valuable in mint state (though a typical lot of eBay wheaties almost certainly wouldn't include any of those).
Keep in mind that neither 1944-D nor 1944-S are better dates by themselves. Only if they have an overmintmark variety (i.e. a "D" *over* an "S", or vice verse). 1944-D and 1944-S without the mintmark variety is common.
My general rule of thumb for Lincolns... Look for those dates before 1935 with circulations less than 10 million. Prices for all of those coins with mints less than this number are ALL going up. Red Book, Coin Prices, Trends, ECoins all seem to agree. Lincolns with circulation numbers of 10,000,001 to 20,000,000 are the next tier in line. Once you get into MSRB/RD or better condition of any of these early Lincolns with mints less than 20 million, bring out your wallet. For later dates, let's not forget the 1955 DDO and 1972 DDO...only so many made and only so many available. What's going to happen in 2009? Rumor has it that they may change the penny. I can see it now...my kids will say, "Wow...that is old...it has the Memorial on the back (reverse)!"
I must add one thing that hasn't been said-- The "key" to the set is the 1909 Proof cent that is at $2500.00 Speedy
