Hi! My son found a weird error on a 2005 West Virginia quarter in our laundry quarters, and I since I know nothing about coins, and can't find much on this particular error on the internet, I'm hoping someone here might be able to help me. The error is like a small tab shaped piece of metal that come out from the edge/threading, and folds over onto the back. It reaches past the lip that is around the edge on the back, and touches the edge of the picture of the new river gorge. I can't find a picture or description on a website that describes what this is. I've attached a few pictures, sorry that they're not great pictures, I just took it with my macbook. I plan on taking it to Liberty Coins in Lansing, MI, but would like to learn a little about this before going. Does anyone have any information that they can give me? Thanks! Melissa
Not too sure...I think this is what they call a 'cud'? IMO, i dont think it was post mint. http://www.cointalk.com/t99706/
Thanks! I just googled cud errors, and this link has a picture very similar error in shape and size to the one we found: http://coins.about.com/od/coinsglossary/g/cud_defined.htm Is the error anything special?
Don't spend it, the WV state qtrs with cuds at 4 & 8 o'clock carry a premium. Not sure of what they're selling for now, but last year I sold one for $15...
It's a pretty common cud, specially on the 2005 West Virginia State quarter. The cuds are found in a variety of places on the coin, some larger than others but no matter the size, it is still a very nice error collectible.
