I was looking at this dollar bill and wanted to know if it's a good deal or what offer should I make. I bought one before and spent to much, so I don't want to repeat the same mistake https://www.ebay.com/itm/1917-1-One...470240?hash=item5b3f4462a0:g:kfwAAOSw3eJZz6oS
See what similar notes have SOLD FOR on eBay. Then you'll have a pretty good idea. Generally "Buy It Now"s aren't great deals. Auctions show what it was worth.
If you really want this particular note, offer $80 and see if the seller counters your offer. There are many Fr.39’s out there in mid grades and for just a little more you can step up to an XF or AU example with more eye appeal. If you’re in the market for popular large size notes, I strongly recommend you see them in person (if you can grade) or buy graded notes. Try to find an original example with a *PQ designation. Look for bright, clean paper and vivid colors. The red seal and serial numbers on these should pop. Always be patient and try to find the nicest example you can afford especially when it’s a note that is not rare.
Enh, you could do worse... you could do better... depends on how long you want to wait, and if you aren't going to immediately turn around and want to get a nicer copy. If that's the case, just wait. Me, I'd pass at this price, as Steve said, maybe $80-$85. Speelman Whites are just everywhere... it's a decent note face up, just obtainable for a bit less. Go after an Elliott Burke - rarer sigs.
I did find one I'll interested in a little bit more. It's in good condition and is rarer. It's a Elliott/Burke. What should I offer for it? https://www.ebay.com/itm/1917-1-U-S...104179?hash=item44068436b3:g:rooAAOSw~oFZw~Rp
The Elliot/Burke is rarer, but still considered common. The second note is in worse condition than the first....looks like it might tear any minute, and a vertical and horizontal fold meet smack dab on the portrait. If you don’t mind me asking, what’s your budget?
You can get a really nice EB sig Sawhorse for $150. As in AU. Or get an Elliott White in high VF for that, an underappreciated combo on the 1917 ace. I spent a long time hunting the Burke-Elliott reverse signature before I recently snared one, so decide what you want, and take your time getting it, if it's really what you want... As Steve said, that note isn't bad but isn't great, and you can do better. The chances of you finding the right deal, today, is low. But if you spend the next month watching... it's much better. EDIT: Steve's example above is nice and gemmy, but you'll drop $400 on it at a bargain price, and up to $500 pretty typically... so at $150, aim for high XF to AU.
Thanks, MEC2. I never buy right away anymore, I like to figure out if something is a deal and decide if I'm ready to take the next step. So, I will wait with all the advance I've got
@MEC2 has it right. There are many VF through AU notes out there that are very affordable. Some of my favorite notes, graded at XF *PQ, were purchased for a fraction of what a CH-CU example would cost you. Relax and enjoy the hunt.
