Having Melqart on obverse, this Shekel was struck in Tyre- Phoenicia. The letters Theta and K figure on left of reverse. The coin weighs 13.22 g. I acquired it few days ago and the seller offered me many others of the same category, but only I picked up this one. What would you advise me? I don't find a Shekel from Tyre every day.
What is up with all of the pock marks on his cheek? Look like casting bubbles OP. Plus, the weight is really low, (like not authentic most likely low). ALL coins related to the bible have always had MASSIVE amounts of fakes made of them. You really need to know what you are doing with them.
Not my area of expertise but I don't like it. In my opinion the eagle looks like it has pot marks all over it. It's a cast fake in my opinion.
Hello, Here we go this is one of the most copied coins there is, so watch out to me this one looks like a copy. If they got more for sure the are fakes. It is a very populair coin, better to buy from a good firm for a lot of money, then cry later...
See this listing in Forgery Network, which shows a pressed fake from Lebanon. Your coin looks like it was a cast made from that particular fake. In other words, it's a fake of a fake . http://www.forgerynetwork.com/asset.aspx?id=/Wan2ZhDeWg= Item : 2827 Description Description : Ancient Greek Oriental Silver Shekel Tyre Shekel of Tyre Authenticity: Forgery - Modern Category : Ancient Greek Phoenicia - Coins Category Details Source Category : Ancient Sold as: Unknown : Greek Oriental Source : fake coins info Entered by : Mac : Phoenicia Key Info Condemnation Region : Tyre Identified as struck or pressed fake from Lebanon
How sad when we've gotten to the point that fakes are being faked. How long before we see a fake of a fake of a fake?
Btw man, don't feel bad. We have all gotten a hold of fakes. You did the right thing and posted here to learn from others. I have collected ancients and done stupid things like bought a female ant without the crescent under her shoulder. @Mat corrected me on that one. No one can know everything, that is why we are here to help each other.
I bought the same coin 5 years ago from a French guy, on the pictures it was good, when arrived I had doubts, I told him I want to return it, then the whole shabang started I needed to proof that it was fake according to e-bay...I did by certificate...but was too late...so..no refund...now I know much more....if too cheap it is fake...espec. such coins as these...
I returned the fake and got my money back, promptly and easily. My seller claims that the third-party had cheated him or he was suckered himself( Third- party). I didn't exchange for anything this time. The coins that I received in exchange of Pb Alexander will be posted very soon. I'm pretty sure they're very genuine.
