Okay, really stupid question, but I often see the denomination of coins from Great Britain spelled as one word or two, particularly with the pence. What's the proper way to refer to them, and is there a difference in meaning?
As far as I know there is no difference. The meaning is the same as is the value. It can be spelled either way.
The current coins, and those of the prior series, say TWO PENCE. As far as I know, the spelling without the space is used for the predecimal 2d coin, and these days maybe if you want to specifically refer to a 2p coin, not the amount ... Christian
For whatever reason, twopence and threepence don't look right to me, but sixpence does. There was also a band called Sixpence None the Richer.
