toned pennies? worth anything other then being blue or multi color and shiny?

I personally have been taken by the look of certain toned pennies and have started to collect them while unrolling pennies looking for wheats

just wondering what people's opinions are on this... I haven't found any information about how or why they tone or rust like they do or if it's a common variety to find.

    thanks,

    Alex

Not really. Unless they are a really high grade and are naturally toned, then maybe. There are many people who collect coins just for their toning and beauty, so it really depends on who you ask. ;) I personally don't really care, as for if I'm buying a really expensive coin, I'd prefer for it not to be toned. But if it's just a regular penny, then it's nice to have. :)

Pennies do tone, and the ones you find in circulation is not the kind of tone that collectors will pay a premium for
Now, high grade, beautifully toned examples, NT or a non obnoxious AT will net mucho bucks, over the retail, it can be up to 40x retail value, and more!
Lehigh96, is our toned expert I guess.. :D
He'll have something to say about this, and also show you some of his goodies :D

I personally like toned pennies. Grade, the (shine) and toning does have a lot to do with it in my point of view. I might not be a pro, but I love toned coins for some reason. :smile

As some of you have seen from the coins I've posted here and the ones on my website, I LOVE toned coins and most of my personal collection, both Indian and Lincoln cents, are toned. Here are a few of my more colorful ones, some of which have previously been posted here:

p.s. I should add that I do have to pay a premium to acquire these beauties, and to me they are worth it!

Perhaps not, but I collect them. When I find one that has a neat color or woody look, I slap it in a 2x2 and put it away. Not paying attention to dates just yet but eventually I'd love to have a set of memorial lincolns of mesmerizing colors pulled entirely from circulation.

I have a couple of very beautiful toned proof cents, but I couldn't get 2 bucks on ebay, even though the pictures almost showed their beauty, So they are back in the bottom of a box somewhere in my highly unorganized collection.

physics-fan3.14 You got any more of them.... prooflikes?

Especially love the 57 there, penny lady.

I don't collect copper, but I do love toners. I stick with my silver toners though, because I understand silver much better than I do copper. To me, knowing the process and science and math and chemistry behind the toning is just as interesting as appreciating the beauty of the toning.

found this thread searching for a different kind of toning. I googled 2 toned because the pennies I pull from circulation are ones I think might have some doubling, get home and scope em. They tend to be bright red for just a sliver around the devices that may or may not be hub doubled (could be md?) What is this called or have y'all noticed it?

I have recently acquired an 1899 Penny, & unlike any of my others this one in particular is extremely soft to the touch & as if it has a spit shine gloss to it. Now its nothing like the beauties in the photos above, but it definitely stands out amongst the others. Also it has a weight of 2.86 grams, yet it shows only slight signs of circulation. Is this a toned penny? Or is it something entirely different?

Even though I'm new here, I am fond of toning too. In particular, toned Jefferson's. I would share, but still working on this coin pix thing. I 'm more used to taking pix of wildlife.
