do you all think the toning on this coin is natural or artificial?

also could the green at the top be from PVC ... i've heard that causes green deposits ... do morgans sometimes tone green naturally?

also what about the orange and almost pink tones ... what could cause that?

by the way this coin was graded MS64 by PCGS

and the back is mostly white

This coin is naturally toned. Morgans can tone many many many colors including green. The most common reasons for them toning is from being stored in albums, mint bags, rolls, old paper type envelopes ect.

    Welcome!

Since it was graded by PCGS, it is market acceptable. The colors seem natural for teh toning. Yes, sometimes they do tone green (See this link for the normal color progression scheme )

It doesn't look like PVC induced damage as much as I can see from the photo. Enlargement of that area would be beneficial. It is not unusual for one side to be toned and the other not.

While the slab glare makes it difficult to get a true idea what the coin looks like, I see nothing that makes me think the coin is AT. Those colors are common on a Morgan Dollar and that aqua color at the top is toning not PVC.

The most surprising thing about this coin is that it is toned at all. The toning on this coin is not particularly attractive and this is just the type of coin that will typically find its way into a dipping solution.

lehigh -- i have only recently become interested in toned coins -- i mostly collected coins in the 1960's when BU (brilliant uncirculated) was the top grade

what makes a toned coin attractive? is it purely subjective? or are there objective criteria?

i've seen the bright morgans with a rainbow stripe ... is that considered the holy grail

if anyone could post toned coins that you consider beautiful and worth a premium ... that would be great

this is a better photo of said coin ... i thought the colors were interesting (different) ... however it is pretty dark and blotchy in spots so i know what you're saying ...

Actually I feel that coin is attractive, but that is me. If the reverse was equally toned, I would really love it.

Could you post a photo of the reverse? If it is as white as you implied, it is possible it was an old "dipped" as commonly done, and only the obverse was situated in a way to tone over time.

Toning is completely subjective and almost always people have very strong feelings about toned coins, one way or the other. Most of the bright Morgans with a rainbow stripe are probably what are referred to as crescent toners. These coins were created when another Morgan rested partially between the toned coin and the canvas bag. The untoned part is where the other Morgan was and the toned part was in contact with the bag. Here is an example.

Crescent toned coins are nice but they are far from the Holy Grail. There may be some dissent, but the following coin that used to be part of the Sunnywood collection is considered the Holy Grail of rainbow toned Morgan Dollars.

Evaluating toned coins and the premiums they drive comes with experience. This link should provide you with a good start.

thanks for the link lehigh ... very interesting reading ... i like your rough valuation method (realizing it is a somewhat subjective thing) ... still your method of following what things bring in auction is a good method ...

it sounds like you are one of the resident toning experts on this board.

thanks for taking the time to help me out!

I was fortunate to get the chance to see the Sunnywood Collection at the PCGS booth at FUN a couple of years ago. The entire collection is fantastic, but the 81-S beats everything hands down.

Those photos make the coin look completely devoid of luster which is just as important as the color. Without both, the coin will always fall short. I am sure that is a nice Morgan but no way is it better than most of the Sunnywood collection and I wouldn't pay more than $1,000 much less $5,000.

Often times a rainbow Morgan Dollar with incredible luster will make the colors appear almost liquid. That is the only way the coin above can make it to the level that he is pricing it. Here is an example of what I am talking about. Vivid doesn't begin to describe the color.

That is one of my favorite Morgans from my collection.
