Thank you for posting the coins. I believe that I only have one coin from Tibet & it resembles your Tibet 5 Shokang 1947-1949. I wonder what you could buy with 5 Shokang in 1947.

Very nice. How about these 1/2 rupees from Bhutan - next door to Tibet?

Beautiful coins willie, I especially like how some of them have the himalayas on them. The 1932-1938 shokang, and the 1947-1949 5 shokang are just wonderful. Thanks for sharing.

I took a couple photos to contribute here. This is a Tangka from Tibet. I'm told that it is genuine & not difficult to find.

    What is the animal?

This one is a Sho from Tibet. Check-out the animal in the design.

Do they have lions in Tibet?

Is it a lion? It looks like a cross between a cow and a dragon.

It looks kinda like a stylized dragon to me...
That Tangka looks very well struck. Nice.

Those were all very nice to see. I collected Tibet actively about 15 years ago, and then, five years ago, sold the last of the best of them to a University of Michigan Chinese doctoral candidate at a coin show in Ann Arbor. He had a real jones, came by several shows in a row. I could not fault his eye. He knew the best pieces.

As a result of a different discussion on another kind of board entirely, I posted this to my blog:
A lot of new research has been published since Kann. If you are serious about the tangka itself or Tibet generally, more modern resources will meet your needs for accurate information. As always, make sure that your purchases are genuine: If you don't know your coin, know your dealer.
