Anyone have any thoughts or opinions pertaining to the Greatest Generation Coins coming out from the mint next month? I think I might have to get these. WWII has a special place for me to include coinage pertaining to that part of our contry's history.

    Greatest Generation Commemorative Coin Program
The 2024 Greatest Generation Commemorative Coin Program honors the service and sacrifice of American soldiers and civilians during World War II. Public Law 117-162, the Greatest Generation Commemorative Coin Act, authorizes the U.S. Mint to issue $5 gold coins, $1 silver coins, and half dollar clad coins emblematic of the National World War II Memorial.

    ---

To be honest, I feel very mixed feelings about this.

First, I think having a series for war heroes is awesome. But, I continue to be frustrated with the mint putting out more 'coins' that will cost top dollar. A $5 gold coin.. :/ I definitely will purchase the half dollar clad. But, at least for me, the $1 silver coin will be out of my price range.

So, for me the 'collection' will be yet another group I won't ever own. But, a great topic/subject.

I relate to that sentiment. I might not ever get one, but I'll still wish for one. The designs look pretty sweet.

This is the 1st time I've heard of this release.

Is there a coin design link that can be posted?

I've generally avoided buying their new products because of what I believe to be inappropriate designs, and requirement for full cost recovery for their believed uncompetitive efforts.

Does anyone know the cost of these items?

How would "one" place a possible order?

I just signed up! The Greatest Generation coins look spectacular! As a baby boomer myself and knowing their sacrifices, I doubt if there will ever be a better generation!

thanks for the information. I had not heard of this.
my mother worked at an aircraft plant during the war and my father served in the Pacific and got shot down. just might break my habit of ignoring mint offerings. James

I have a very large WWII collection but have resolved to never buy from the US Mint again. They are flooding the country with useless coins at unreasonable prices that can never be recovered.

I bought (when I was actively collecting old time radio), an original, 1941 copy (a radio station linechecked it) of Roosevelt's Day of Infamy speech for less than the cost of the Tubman half-dollar. The pricing is a bit high.

That being said, it is excellent that they are honoring the Greatest Generation.

I agree with you up to a point. I think the main thing with new issue coins is to be patient. I just looked at all the 2021 Morgan and Peace Dollar Set and all for in MS70 are at least $1000.00 more than I paid.

With the the 2021 Type1 and 2 ASE Designer Set in '70 all are at least $200.00 more than I paid. The 2020 ASEV75 all are at least $150.00 more than I paid. I could continue, but I think my point was made to justify what I am trying to point out. To me what is the biggest rip-off is the Bullion ASE. I guess since the ASE is the most popular coin in the world it is somewhat expected, if that is true. I think the problem with this one is just what people are willing to pay to have one, not the mint's fault

There are others that what you say is absolutely true. A lot of what the mint produces I don't buy, and have no intention of buying. I don't sort of keep tabs on newer issues I've bought to see how much profit I could make if I sold, didn't buy them to sell. I am always happy to see if I did sell any I could at least get my money back. I think a person can do okay if they don't have to have as soon as they come out or even close to it. If after about 3 years if I can sell for say 10% more than I paid I'm okay with that. But, what is important here is I wanted them because I like them, not motivated one bit by potential profit. As always to each there own. I know some will disagree this, and it doesn't mean any of us ar right or wrong, just what one wants and the other doesn't.

@lardan You are correct. I get coins because I like them and don't plan to sell. But, I can't justify the current costs. I have a complete set of Dollars from before 1900 to about 2018. I have a complete set of half dollars with modern commemoratives before 1900 to about 2018. Same thing with the ASE coins. I had to stop because there were too many new issues and too many variations.

The designs may look nice but the prices they want are not attractive at all. If I get a set it will be in the after market.
