Hello, According to the US MINT, penny production will be discontinued as of April 1, 2023. Think this is an April Fools prank? What are your thoughts on this ending? It is sad to know that they are going to go away, but it can't be changed.
They should have done away with them in 1982 instead of changing the composition. Do you know anybody that DOSEN'T have change jar/container socked away that is mostly pennies? Stop making them and there will still be enough to go around for a couple hundred years I bet!
Oh, boy! This is "Ghostly Haunting" I fail for that April Fools Satire myself, I posted a link to it on another forum, the results of that wasn't pretty, there was NO Mercy. In fact just a few days ago I was on ebay looking for a set of the new 22 Lincoln's and in the title of one I saw, the last of the Lincoln Penny! I felt sorry for the guy and I messaged him and I told him that I had to eat crow over that same online article, he said he would do some more research, the next day I got another message from him saying he's starting to know what crow taste like. I wish you better luck here than I had on that other forum!
It doesn't, it was an April fools article from many years ago that keeps getting brought up from time to time.
Here it is, Just keep in mind of the date April 1 21 Satire warning alert!!!!! https://cashmoneylife.com/us-mint-cease-penny-production/
I've noticed it get brought up more commonly recently. It used to be like once every 3 months but now I'm seeing articles about it every 2 weeks or so.
The cent and nickel, as we know them, might be ending sooner than you think. With inflation what it is and the static face value of the cent and nickel what they are, those two coins now melt for more than their face value. As I've said before, I hope that the mint continues to make cents for collector sets, like Proof and mint sets. The cent has a long, almost unbroken series of consecutive dates that go back to 1793. Only the 1815 has broken the string.
There's something vaguely preposterous about this figure. Though, if only I owned a zinc mine, I'm sure I'd feel differently...
Coin production - of any denomination - will stop when the Mint's customers: The Federal Reserve and Collectors stop ordering them. Period The laws require that "the mint SHALL" (shall in law = MUST). The out is that "the Secretary shall determine the quantity". This could be ZERO, if no customer orders them. If the Fed keeps ordering cents and nickels, the mint keeps making them. Unless CONGRESS changes the laws.
Yea, I imagine some of it is people just trolling or having fun watching people get worked up but it's definitely coming up more especially for how old it is
Oh jeez, not again. With the lousy Zincoln's now, I honestly wouldn't care if they stopped minting the cent.
At one time in my life the cent actually had purchasing power: penny candy, bubble gum machines, etc. Now with the exception of state sales tax I don’t believe there is a legitimate use for them, other than line the pockets of the zinc lobby.
I'm into dollars myself their easier to carry. My wife can carry the change, yeah right who am I kidding!
OK, interesting thread. I'm all for doing away with the cent and nickel and rounding to the nearest dime. With that being said, I have a Japanese connection (my wife), so, I looked at the yen, which is still being produced. A 1 yen coin is so small and light, they will float. They are no longer produced for circulation though they are made for the yearly coin sets. There are now 117 yen to the dollar (not much different than our cent), but 845,000 were made in 2021. The mintage of the last circulation coins in 2015 was 82,000,000 and just for reference, in 1982 (the death of the bronze/brass cent) the mintage was 1,000,000,000. Maybe a thread about the most "worthless" coins. (Probably been done, but I'm too lazy/incompetent to track it down)
