    Folks,

I get the Littleton catalog ever so often. In the latest, they have the 1899 Black Eagle and the 1918 Green Eagle selling as a pair. The condition claimed is Very Good. They are asking 342.00 for the pair. Of course they give you an option to make 3 easy payments of 114.00. That appeals to me because of the payment option. Has anyone dealt with Littleton in the past? Are their bills quality?

    Thanks,

    Shea

fuzz... Try the 'Advanced Search' feature on CT located in the upper right corner. There are plenty of reviews on Littleton and other coin dealers. I'm sure you'll find a strong reaction to this inquiry here shortly as well. ;)

There was a Littleton thread a few months back. I think the consensus was that while they have a wide variety and decent selection, their coins are over-priced and marketed towards the beginner or those not really knowledgeable about coins.

This is further evidence that most people in most times and places are wrong about most things.

Littleton is a fine firm. They do what they promise. They have a guaranteed return policy for 45 days. When they buy coins from dealers, they do not buy problem coins -- no "net graded VF with XF details and rim nicks and old cleaning."

People who claim that Littleton is "overpriced" fail to completely account for the true cost of a purchase.

Littleton has been in business since 1945. They are a second-generation shop. They are ANA member dealers who subscribe to the ANA Dealer Code of Ethics.

We easily give our opinions, as I just gave mine. How can you tell if someone is reliable? What makes one person's claims as valid (or less, or more) than another's?

The easiest way to find out if they are to your liking -- not mine; not his -- is to try them.

All I am going to say is that when I am buying all the coins are overpriced and when I am selling the reverse holds true. If you want the coins, shop for them, then decide where to buy them. If they are the only dealer who has what you want, that limits the choices considerably. But, it's like buying a car. Someone will always tell you about a better deal, after the fact.

I don;t think there is a lot of wiggle room on a $300 item if it's something you really want.

I see many post’s regarding Littleton, only a few, seem to have any positive points. I would like to point out some positives. First of all I have been a collector since my childhood in the 60’s just when Clad started to replace actual silver coins. I still have every single coin I ran across, with the exception of giving coins as gifts to new collectors. I would be classified a collector FIRST, investor second. Now to my offering of this debate… Littleton is a fine company. Their product and Customer Service is TOP NOTCH. You do not become a Major Company, especially in this economy being anything but.
First, is Littleton expensive? ABSOLUTELY. I would say about Twice as expensive for coin when compared to current price listings. Are they correctly graded? Again I would say ABSOLUTELY! I have found their grading to be very fair, and have only read very few posts here criticizing their grading. Now that being said, a couple of things that Littleton does, not mentioned in prior posts, offer for customers to complete their series. If you join one of their clubs (Franklin Halves, Morgan Dollars, etc.) after your 3rd or 4th shipment, Littleton sends you a deluxe coin album with your approval coins for free. Not their Intercept, top of the line album, but a very decent three ring binder that is easily Whitman or Dansco quality. Next, with every order, Littleton awards Profit Shares that are redeemable for supplies and other coins. Also about the colorized coins and spurious coin sets that Littleton offers, I feel that they are offering products of interest for those customers that want them. Littleton also has a customer friendly return policy; they want their customers to come back. To sum up….. Expensive? Heck yes. But I felt that a whole picture needed to be presented to be fair and balanced! Good Day to All!! Steve

And a great selection too. You can find most US coins in a variety of grades, they just charge high retail prices. They charge on the high side of REDBOOK prices in my experience. Hey they gotta make a profit.

WOW pricey is right! I just checked their site, they are way above RedBook on a lot of coins. They want $56.50 for an ASE that you can pick up for under $25.00 from most coin dealers.

I agree with whats been said... Littleton is way over priced for most coins. But they do have a great selection, decent grading, and their customer service is good too. It boils down to what is important to you i guess.... do you want purchases for bottom dollar, or purchases from a dealer who will stand behind their purchase?

I once complained to them for over hyping the Washingtom commem they were advertising. They said it was rare and was offering it for triple book price. I sent them an email asking them how 6+ million coins, the most of any commem can be claimed as rare, and how they could sleep at night at the price when they new the coin was anything but rare. It was this tipping point, that made me request to be removed from their mailing list.

Thanks, Steve! That is just one reason why I said that people who complain about prices do not account for the true cost of a purchase. Littleton eliminates risk, which is a cost not tallied. Part of that is grading. The two go together. Then there is the cost of shopping online or in person, the time spent looking... and looking... Littleton does not buy problem coins, so all of their inventory is quality.

On another tack entirely, Mr. Sundman supports the hobby in many material ways, not the least of which is funding an ANA lecture series. Other dealers do their part as well, of course; the top-flight ones do. But, that, too, is to the point.

I have been collecting for almost 40 years and can tell you that in the past I have dealt both with Littleton but also with buyers of coins from Littleton. Never in ALL of these dealings has a coin ever been described as inaccurately graded.

Pricewise, many people don't understand that if you get a money back guarantee, then price is price. If you're unhappy with it for the money, send it back. Spend 20 days trying to find a better deal with the coin in-hand. Many times you won't be able to do so. Not many dealers will honor a guarantee like that.

Most local dealers will work with you on a 90 day LAYAWAY . My suggestion is to locate an ANA Member Dealer in the Nashville area . More likely than not, if they don't have what you want, they will probably locate one for you. Take the time to develop a relationship with a local dealer, it will pay big dividends down the line. emailBOLmailto:info@coinbidders.com or Call Nashville Coin Gallery 615-832-9904 www.coinbidders.com

I have only had a few experiences with them, and the last one was not good. I bought a few coins from them in 1998 or 1999, they were accurately graded. Then about 5 years later they were advertising BU JFK's at a good price, so I ordered from them, filled out the form with my current address, wrote out a check with my current address on it (I had moved after the last time I ordered from them). Two months passed and I never got the coins, and the check cleared the bank, so I called them. Get this, they sent the coins to my old address! After a year the PO stops forwarding your mail so I don't know if the coins were returned or the new occupants got them. I was pretty irate, since my addy was on the order form and check.

I have to agree with race on this. Seems like every year the average mom or family mermber wants to buy there family coin collector a gift . Littleton always has the catchy little cent album or nickel album that looks great and sells in record numbers. I always except one of these gifts and cringe because i know the buyer just got hosed trying to buy me a gift. To each his own but I dont buy from them.

Did you get a refund? 45 days is a very fair time to return, as opposed to 7 or 14 days. Also did you contact Customer Service? They will work hard to make it right for you!
