1938 JEFFERSON NICKEL AWARD WINNING DESIGN Darrell Crane, President of The Jefferson Full Step Nickel Club, in conjunction with Ron Landis (master die engraver of The Gallery Mint Museum) and S.E.G.S. (Sovereign Entities Grading Service) Presents The Jefferson Nickel 1938 Award Winning Design by Felix Schlag. A limited production of (1,938) Matte-Finish Uncirculated coins and (1,938) Proof coins will be struck. They will be .999 silver, with a diameter of 21.2mm (standard nickel size). Each encapsulated coin, uncirculated and proof quality, will be numbered 1 thru 1938. These 1938 Jefferson patterns show the "Reverse" on Felix Shalag's (unadopted) Design with also a "Corner-View" of the Monticello. Here are Photo(s) that shows the "Proof and Matte-Finish" Coins. Every so often, a seller will put one of these if not both on the Ebay auction. :secret: It was noted that not long afterwards making these and selling them to the public, one of these turned up at a Internet-Auction Site, that was incompletely described, and was, "Sold" to a naive' Buyer for over $500.00...:crying: I hope you enjoy the Photos ... chasindreams/
I recall when these hit eBay back in 2002/2003?. I did a little research and was able to purchase a set from the Full Step Nickel Club for the original issue price which I think was around $75 for 1 of each. The nickels are very nicely executed and since the mintage was limited to only 1,938 sets, I expect the price to increase as the years go by. Certainly not an ultra rare coin in the numismatic sense but definitely a must have for the Jefferson Nickel collector.
Hello, an' yes,,, I got these on Ebay as well,,,, a Seller wanted the same amount for them. I wrote him back, an' told him I'd only send him a flat $100 for (both) of them . A few minutes later, he agreed to it ! I honestly don't think, I could buy these for less than $50.00 (apiece) anywhere... Have a nice day! chasindreams/
Yes I recall reading something about these but unfortunately I don't have any Gallery Mint coins. I heard one of the owners/founders had passed away a couple years ago but what happened to the other guy did he just stop minting all the great ideas?
Joe Rust was the one who passed away at Gallery mint.. Ron Landis is still around, he and I have talked and will probably do a joint coin carving project, by this I,ll design and cut one side of coin and Ron will design and cut the other side..
They are pretty well done, and Landis may have been involved with the engraving but I don't believe the Gallery Mint was involved with the striking.
They are a great design. I've looked at them a number of times but have never found a set at a price I was prepared to pay - at that time.
