Strange '76 Nickel Error

The picture attached is of the reverse of a 1976 Jefferson Nickel. Under a magnifying glass, it looks as though the ridge of the coin was bent and pressed over the inscription E Pluribus Unum. You can see the outline of the letters underneath the metal covering them up. I am unaware of this type of error, and I am hoping that someone will be able to help me out. Also, the D mint mark and star on the obverse are filled in. Is this a valuable coin or just 5 cents?

    Thanks,
    Ben

I belive that there was an article in the CONECA mag. not too long ago about the rim issue. I can't remember all of it and I don't have my copy right here or I would check. Maybe Mike can go into detail. This could be something totally different...but it rings a bell.

As for the stars. From the looks of this photo the coin has been circulated alot....wear and such has just worn down the detail....so in that "cents"...its normal. The coin is really nicked up and so I would say most of the detail is worn pretty bad....

The thin apron of metal on the reverse represents post-strike damage. A little bit of metal was relocated from the rim to the area just inside it. Subsequent wear allowed the thin metal to mold itself to the underlying design. The coin as a whole is badly battered.
