Storing coins in PVC sleeves

    Hello

I have been reading up on PVC damage to coins and I am still a little bit unclear. If I keep my coins in 2x2 cardholders made of Mylar and store these cardholders in album sleeves made of PVC, will that cause PVC damage to the coins? I know the cardholders are not air tight but will PVC damage still occur if the coins are not in direct contact with the PVC sleeves?

If PVC sleeves are not the best way, what would be the best way to store these coins that would also allow me to display them easily? Albums are obviously the best way to display but most of the sleeves are made of PVC.

    Thank you.

    Best regards
    EH

First, welcome to the neighborhood @EH OOI !

Perhaps I am not understanding your terminology, but why would you store 2x2's in some sort of sleeve? Why not store them in a 2x2 box or maybe plastic pages that hold 20 - 2x2's? Better yet, why not use Saflips for your coins?

    Hello Chris,

The sleeves I am referring to are these:

Are these the pages you are talking about? If they are PVC, would PVC damage occur to the coins even if they are placed inside 2x2 cardboard holders? I can't find SAFlips where I am, so most of my coins are in cardboard 2x2. However, keeping them in a box makes it hard to look at them.I figure the best way is the sleeves or 2x2 pages above but what damage would it do to the coins if these sleeves are made of PVC?

    Thanks.

    Best regards.

Don't think the image showed, let me upload it here. By the way, those are not my coins. Just found the image from Google.

I do this with lower value coins and have not had any issues with PVC residue. As long as the mylar window is intact, you shouldn't have a problem.

If would you live in a warmer, humid area like FL, you may want to check occasionally. If the pages start to feel "sticky" then the PVC is breaking down at an accelerated rate and then it would be best to remove the 2x2's.

Storing in boxes is fine but it just makes it harder to look at the coins.

BTW: Spend the money to buy the heavy duty pages. If you store the binders on a shelf, the weight tends to cause the pages to collapse and fold, particularly if you have heavier coins

I have stored my US Type collection this way since the 1970s. No problems.
