A person I work with came to me with a question about a quarter that was given to him, It is a state quarter and one of the side's (obverse or reverse not specified) is completly copper and the other nickel can anybody give me any info on what this may be worth or any info what so ever. I did ask them tho bring it next time they come in so if pics are needed I can get them. And I do realize condition is a factor.
You need to check out Ken Potter's Variety vault site. http://koinpro.tripod.com/ -I'm sorry this link doesn't take you directly to the state quarter errors. If you google "finding state quarter errors a unique oppurtunity" it will take you directly to the state quarter errors on his site. The "Clad Layer Missing Before Strike" section is half way down the page.
If it is actually a missing copper layer it would be highly collectible. Is the coin thinner than a normal quarter? Is it lighter than a normal quarter? Are the details fully struck up? Is the reeding fully struck up?
Sounds like it's missing a clad layer. If so, it should weigh about 4.7 grams. Depending on condition, value would range between $150 and $250.
You are very welcome. And like everyone else said, these coins are highly collectible, -especially in a PCGS, NGC, or ANACS case.
I have read on other forums that the clad layer can be physically removed by soldering tabs on one side, attaching the other side to a wooden or metal dowel with the hard wax that is used to hold gem stones to dops when faceting, insert the dowel into a vise and gently pulling on the tabs to minimize distortion of the copper. The wax can be removed from the other side without affecting its clad. A. Has anyone actually tried this to see what evidence of alteration remains? I would expect distortion of the copper layer if tugged on too strongly and not vertically, but I am unsure how strongly the clad adheres to the copper. Jim
The clad layer is VERY VERY strongly attached to the copper. It is HIGHLY unlikely you'll be able peel off a layer.
Ok so here is the coin in question, It look s authentic to me and I gave him all the info I could so now he plans on selling it. I told him he should have it graded first and game him a card to a coin shop that could help him out with that. He says he has had it ever since its release.
VERY VERY NICE!!! I've got an older "Eagle Reverse" one with some of the clad missing, but it doesn't look very nice.
I have a 2015 Louisana Kisatchie quarter where the front of the quarter is normal colored and the back side looks like a copper or goldish color. It does not weigh the same as a normal quarter either. is this a legal quarter?>
I also found a quarter that has the copper one one side and nickel on the other.it is a beautiful copper color on the whole side.. and I weighed it just to be sure, and it weighed 4.7... and the other regular quarters weighed 5.7.its in excellent condition and I keep I in a air tight case...do I have something rare?
