Wasn't really sure if there was a place to ask this, so I put it here. I have a yellow gold ring with a peridot gem in it. Inside of the ring is stamped GC 14k. I'm trying to find out what the GC means but am not getting a solid answer. Most places I've looked have no answer while others places have listed it means Gold Content, Gold Clad, or Gold Coated. Does anyone here know what the GC stands for? As always, thank you all for your help.

Could be the makers or companies initials.

Thank you, that seems very reasonable to me. I found another site that listed GC as unidentifiable so they makers initials seems very possible.

You can always post of picture of the ring on here. We could at least see if it is obviously plated or crappy made.

Some of the Gold Clad rings sold rather inexpensively by QVC are labeled with GC. Since it isn't as strict a term as Karat or Sterling, these plated jewelry pieces can be obtuse on purpose. Some GC, GP, are called fancy names. Typically a peridot gemstone is considered inexpensive and usually in a .925 silver or a gold plated ring , most sold on eBay, a Mall stall, or TV.

I would bet the ring is gold plated , but the only way to be sure is to test it with an acid gold test .

I am fairly sure also that it is plated. A cut or filing would have to be done shallow to test, as the plate 'should' test 14K. If you obtained this thinking it was solid 14K and can return it, that would be best, IMO.

Thanks again, my wife got it a long, long time ago. She was going through her old jewlery the other day that she doesn't wear to get rid of. I wanted to see if it actually was 14k gold to try and sell, but looks like this one is going to one of the little nieces. Thanks again everyone.

Your safest bet is to take this stuff to a jeweler that you trust and have them test the metal.
