What is the value of a silver dime, Mercury & pre 65 Roosevelt, based on the silver content ? I calculate about 49 cents based on the spot price of silver. Does this sound right ? My calcs are based on a dime having 0.0724 ozs of silver. This would translate into about $24.58 for a roll of silver dimes ?
Welcome to the forum! That is correct. Here is the rundown of the silver coins and silver content: Wartime nickel: .05626 oz Dime: .07234 oz. Quarter: .18084 oz. Half Dollar: .36169 oz. Silver Clad Half Dollar: .14792 oz. Silver Dollar: .77344 oz. Silver Clad Dollars: .3161 oz. If you take the oz of silver and multiply it by the spot price, you have the melt value.
See the oz. in dimes above and multiply it by the current spot price (I think it closed at 6.89) on Friday. All US dimes, quarters, and halves were .90 silver prior to 1964. The oz above is based on .90 silver coinage. Except for the silver clad issues (.40 silver) halves and dollars which are separated out above.
For those of you who have copies of the "Red Book" they have a silver chart towards the back that will break the value of all the silver coins down for you. If you don't have a Red Book maybe you should ask SusanLynn9. She knows where you can get one I know. catman
