How can I find out why this coin is silver tone? It's identical to the normal gold tone ones right down to the weight? Was found in a bankroll from the bank... 20181130_204358.jpg

You need a better picture than that! Looks like it is reflecting the light from the room. Take it out of the holder and show both sides.

Pictures of a normal gold tone beside it. Can't figure out how to take a picture without it reflecting any available light

Looks plated. It is a gimmick done outside of the US Mint.
Silver and Gold Plated Presidential Dollars.

They say the thin layer of Silver brings "value" to the coin... IT DOES NOT!

You just don't understand. It's about the bling. It's also why you would put flames on your car. :cigar:

That's what I figured, but how can find out what it is plated with? It's not nickel plated. No magnetic attraction whatsoever. All the plated coins I have are at least slightly attracted to a magnet.

Silver tarnishes, and over the years it hasn't tarnished. My Dad has had this coin for quite a while and it wasn't in the holder until today.

I believe that is true for a real silver coin.. not plating

I bet it's worth $1.:D j/k If it's an error it's worth a lot more, especially if it's minted on a silver planchet or unfinished coin. Maybe it's a creation from that US Mint worker who was arrested for stealing presidential error coins in the amount of 2.4 million. That would be a super freak and maybe sell for a ton of money.;) good luck!

It's an error. Pretty sure it missing the plating of manganese brass that normal presidential coins get before leaving the mint. I have one of these also.

    I don't think so..
The Maganese plating is over a copper core.

I got one of Ulysses s grant from vending machine. I keep googling to find an answer. Maybe it slipped past plating process and into circulation. That might make it an error coin those are valuable. Dont spend it. Take it to a coin dealer. They can answer your question. I know I will

    Nope.
If it were not normally plated it would be a copper color not silvery. Sorry.

Also the Mint doesn't plate planchets or coins.

Presidential dollars use 77Cu 12Zn 7Mn 4Ni outer layers bonded to a pure Copper core. This cladding process is the same that's used for current dimes, quarters and halves just with a different composition. Nothing is plated and none of these layers are silver colored.

If you found a presidential dollar that is silver, it was plated AFTER it left the mint and is not an error. Also, if you take your coin to a dealer, make sure they have an interest and knowledge of errors coins. Errors are a small segment of collecting and not everyone is knowledgeable.
