1959 "Silver" penny with a silver rim around the edge? Also a 1960 nickel with this same ring only brass.

Anybody know what this is?? I've heard "Spooning", I've heard its from a dryer. But its not from any of the above. The metal rim can almost be spun. Its seperate metal someone pressed onto the coin. I've attached a few pictures. The 1959 (not '43) "Silver" penny was weird enough but this seperate rim has got me scratching my head....Any speculations??

Regarding the nickel, looks to be some sort of bezel put around the coin. They are commonly used for jewelry attachments.

As for the cent, I can't see anything that looks silver colored, so I'm confused by that part. But it looks like the coin may have a planchet flaw.

yes the penny is silver, which is odd in itself. its a 1959 with no mint stamp or whatever its called. heres a pic of the only other one i've seen. this ones a 1960 and supposedly sold at auction for 2000$, so says the website i found the pic on...this one has the same strange ring as mine does.

Take a picture of your cent next to another cent because it sure doesn't look silver colored in the pictures you posted. It looks like an ordinary cent. Now that may be because of the pictures, pictures are known to do that. But a pic with your '59 right next to another ordinary cent, or even two of them, may help.

Is it possible you have an off-metal strike ? Yes, it's possible. But it is extremely unlikely.

I'll tell you what it looks like to me; back in the late 50's, early '60's, we would buy "penny keychains"... a Lincoln cent that had an extremely tight fitting bezel mechanically pressed into place. A tiny loop was soldered to the top of the bezel and a keychain attached. The cent/bezel was silver plated so that it looked very similar to your obverse photo. Now since this bezel was "pressed" into position, it left a slight circular "tooling" depression near the perimeter, also seen in your obverse photo. Sometimes we would mess around with these keychains and try to pull the bezel off, which usually resulted in a deformation at the attachment point of the chain. Then the loop would break off, leaving a coin identical to yours. Not saying that's what you have, but maybe a possibility.

thats what i thought at first, I actually still have one of those. In the pic where you see the bezel lifted, was actually me trying to seperate it years ago, other than that, theres no spot on the bezel that looks like it was ever attached to anything, its perfectly smooth. Also its magnetic.
Comparison pics coming in a little bit.

Could you please report the weight of the "silver cent" and the nickel?

Cazkaboom One for all, all for me.

Could be zinc coated. Here's a video on how it is done. I have come across many of these. Worth 1 cent or 2.2 if it is pre-1982

I don't think silver is magnetic either.

Silver isnt magnetic. I mean very silver in color. Im just interested becuase i thght they only made steel pennies in '43. Ive only seen one other from '75 i believe.

Looks like an ordinary cent to me. Toning and reaction to all kinds of things can make cents turn all sorts of colors. And if you pried that section loose on the cent, it's definitely just a bezel.

The silver cent weighs 3.5 grams

That penny should only be 3.11 grams if what I'm reading is correct. The coin has clearly been altered post mint to make some sort of jewelry.

It weighs more likely due to the extra band that was placed around the edge.

And if it was actually silver it would weigh considerably more than that. But if it had a bezel around it, that sounds about right.
