Why do I see on YT stacker videos asking for big premiums for their silver bars they bought from third-party mints like those Tombstone 5oz bars? And are people really that gullible to pay for those premiums for a silver bar that is basically a "round" in bar form, and not govt bullion backed (like the RCM 10 oz or 100 oz bars)? IMO I just don't see a collector value to them or a "rarity" to them. Some third-party mint made hand-poured 10 oz pirate skull silver "3D Bar". But the price is $205.00. Silver is at $15.20 an oz. http://www.yeagerspouredsilver.com/ I was reading on other forums that a lot of coin shops do not purchase these kind of bars or rounds from people. Some said it was b/c the shop doesn't trust the oz printed on it or that its 100% pure silver.
That's why I usually buy bars from the larger producers . What do you think of Silvertowne bars ? Has anyone heard of people refusing to buy them ? Also thoughts on RMC , Ampex and Sunshine . I'd think 5 and 10 oz bars would be easy to check though most of my silver is in 90% US coins and ASEs .
Im not a big fan of Silvertowne in general. I hear APMEX bars or rounds (the ones with the APMEX logos) are hard to re-sell. Sunshine Mint rounds with that security feature I hear is really good and easy to re-sell to shops or eBay. I think RMC is on the level of Sunshine. I know that Scottsdale Silver rounds and bars, any of those Buffalo silver rounds (1 oz) fly off the shelves and are easy to re-sell on eBay. I personally stay away from bars especially those gimmicky ones like the Tombstone bars, anything from Yeager Poured, and even Provident Metals zombiebuck rounds. The only generic silver or third-party silver I purchase are 1 oz Buffalo silver rounds from my local shop, and RCM 10 oz bars. Other people would disagree, but to me with silver at 15.21 an oz, paying 20, 23, 25, up to 30 for a bar or round is ridiculous. In my area Chicagoland I know for fact all the nearby shops stay away from buying any generic silver rounds and bars expect for the Buffalo's, Perth Mint bars, Pamp bars, and RCM 10 oz bars. I've seen some zombiebuck rounds and other gimmicky generic silver available but one owner admitted he buys them from customers at 95% spot, but then sells them 10-25% over spot.
Silver is silver period. Maybe small premiums here and there but I'll take ANY bar at the right price (except maybe those ugly ebay bars lol). And as to counterfits, There are waaaay more real bars to counterfit ones out there so the law of averages is on your side. It's like being nervous about a usps package not getting to its destination. Sure it happens but it's actually quite rare going by the numbers. Life's too short to worry about something with a >1% chance of happening imho
You do know that Scottsdale make makes both the the bars and rounds that "fly of the shelves" in your reply also make the Tombstone bar? Not gimmicky in my opinion just look at the recent markup. You are just too late to the party.
I still don't why people pay the ridiculous premiums for third party stuff. I used to collect coca-cola antiques (1900s-1960s). And to me buying third party silver bars and rounds with huge markups is like buying the Walmart brand of coca-cola to add to your collection. But instead of paying for Walmart prices for the Walmart offshoot brand of Coke you're paying for the expensive "imported" Mexican Coke products but still only Walmart brand generic Coke. To me in the end it's all the same silver just one is legit govt backed and official bullion while the other is 9/10x more expensive and not backed, and only has "collector" value based on what some people are willing to pay for it even though its still a third party generic offshoot silver piece.
I've wised up as I've gone along. I almost exclusively buy my bullion online. There is one shop in Des Moines I used to buy from, but I don't get down there anymore. If/when I sell, I plan to try to sell it locally first, and if they can't match what I can get selling it back to my online dealer, then i'll sell it back to Apmex, SD Bullion, or Provident. In the event I can dump it locally, I have kept all my receipts too to help paint the picture that it's legit.
Hi folks, I pretty much buy everything online anymore. Too easy and you don't have any fuss nor bother. I do have a GREAT LCS that has great prices, but it's still easier online. As for quality of bullion, the higher the quality, the higher the premium. You'll normally pay more for an ASE than some other foreign bullion coin. And more for silver rounds and ingots. As for rounds and ingots, the better the brand, the higher the premium. I have always wanted either Engelhard or Johnson Matthey rather than Joe's Bar & Grill and Mint. You want to be able to sell the stuff easily. You want an asset that is more fungible. Hell, you can sell an ASE at most McDonalds. peace, rono
Every once in a while you guys should use your imagination. You can buy a couple of the 40 million ASEs they pump out every year or any of the other things made by commercial or government mints, but there are hundreds of thousands of them. You could buy something out of the ordinary if you like them, I don't believe anybody has some tried and true answer....obviously some of you think you know...but do you?
Silver is silver so it's not like you are getting something illiquid. HOWEVER...if you want the greatest ease of selling, it's going to be what the buyer is going to be able to turn around and sell to his future buyer. That would almost certainly be coins. My LCS said that his ratio of gold and silver coin buyers to bar buyers is 10:1 and 20:1, respectively. So he knows he has a 10x and 20x better shot of getting interest from a buyer if he buys gold/silver coins. Also, with the new 5 oz. ATB coins you now have a larger liquid coin source than the 1 oz. In the past, bars were liked by some because you could get more than 1 oz of silver.
I buy the cheapest silver possible. The only time I pay more of a premium for silver is when I like the bar/ coin. For example, my 8yr old son enjoyed the 2oz privateer round and I loved the high relief design, so I bought him one and myself one. I have ot sitting out to tone, it have already started with some goldish coming through.
