i recently found a 1989 D penny that is solid silver in color in a roll. I've studied it pretty close for a few days now, and it doesn't seem to have been dipped in anything or chemically altered. I own a business and go through about 30-40 rolls of pennies a day and i've never came across anything like this. I've heard that this may sometimes happen because the copper coating on the out side of the zinc was too thin when the coin was struck. Does anyone have any info?
I have a 1989 Canadian cent that looks the same way. My guess is that someone might have been doing some experimenting in chemistry class back then.
yep, good 'ol chem class. we did this expirement a couple of months ago. it was pretty cool. i was quite suprised that it was so uniform. btw, its a zinc coating.
