I just recently found a 1957 wheat penny and after some research i found that it has a shriner symbol on the front and a masonic symbol on the back, Has anyone got any info on this or even seen one?? after all my research i haven't been able to find a penny like this
I've gotten quite a few. They are just Masonic stamps punched into regular cents. They are practically a novelty. And Welcome to cointalk!
so you have one with both the shriner and masonic symbols on it??? i've been researching it alot and haven't found any other out there?? i know the masonic pennies are very popular and have plenty but this coin actually has the shriner symbol on the front and masonic on the back
A picture of the obverse and reverse would help. But I don't have one with both on it. I do have one with a masonic stamp and one with a Shriner stamp somewhere...
Interesting.. A lot of the people here would call it a damaged coin (which it practically is) But I have found the counterstamped and design punched cents to be a fun novelty to collect. Value... Not much, maybe $1-2 on a good day. This is not my site I don't have any affiliation with this site, nor am I trying to sell anything (standard protocol), but here are some of the punched coins I often find in circulation. http://www.villagecoin.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=coin&Category_Code=NOVC
Definitely a novelty class item, but seems to be a bit older and more interesting than most such Masonic stamped pennies. Probably could get $10 or so for it on eBay, which is more than the dollar or two you would get from the run-of-the-mill Masonic stamped cents (when someone actually bids on them).
I agree with Numismat. The stamping is also of better quality than most I have seen giving a little more detail. Plus the older wheat cent design. It would definitely be more interesting because of the stamp quality.
Welcome to the neighborhood, Kayla! The counterstamped coins are definitely worth keeping if for no other reason than being interesting conversation pieces. There are collectors who search for this kind of exonumia. I have an acquaintance who is a retired employee of the Philadelphia Mint, and he gave me a dozen or more Lincolns and Roosevelts which he counterstamped with Shriner's and Mason's logos. I've kept them just because they are cool! Chris
i don't know much about coins not a collecter but i really found this interesting just because when i researching it i couldn't find one like it, i also noticed that masonic ones or the shriner ones i found didn't have both of them on the same coin like mine and that the ones i found that were stamped with either you could tell had been stamped like the heating showed on the coin or it was dented but this coin is neither. it's very odd? i would like to find out more about it if any of you know anyone that could help or know were i could take it to find out more about it please let me know, i could care less about it's worth i just think it is a very rare coin and would just like to know if there are any others like it
I'm not sure what the connection is between the wo organizations is but I find that most Shiners are also Masons
the Shriners are a group within the Masons. I believe that you can be a Mason without being A Shriner but you can't be a Shriner without being a Mason. Richard
The progression used to be Master Mason to Scottish Rite or York Rite Mason to the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine (Shriners). The Shriners eliminated the Scottish or York Rite step to get more members. My grandfather was a member of the Medinah (Chicago) chapter of the Shriners. This token has nothing to do with my grandfather but it looks neat anyway: Shriners Medinah Temple Chicago Medallion Bronze, 34mm, 20.52gm Obverse: Bust of Frank Roundy facing left FRANK C. I'm new here and sure I'm posting a ? In the wrong place. Forgive me. Question : I have a one cent penny -bowl shaped. Inside the bowl there is a Masonic symbol with a 'G' on the inside. On the flip side there is a triangle with the #32 printed on the inside and a lot of tiny writeng around the edges. Can someone explain what it all means, example the #32 Inside a triangle what does this symbol I dictate. Is it a chapter 32 or perhaps a 32 degree etc. Thx
