Did the San Francisco mint make business strike coins for the 2003 s Illinois state quarter? I can't seem to find much information about that coin, there's a few mentioned but nothing about business strikes
There are a number of S mint Quarters with a business strike. I think they’ve started in 2013. I also think some of the Women’s Quartets are.a S mint mark business strike.
2003 Illinois Proof and Silver Proof, starting in 2013 San Fran had the White Mountain, Perry's Victory, Great Basin, etc uncirculated strike of about 1.3 to 1.6 million each.
And while they did produce business-strike quarters, those were never issued for circulation, right? Only sold in rolls or bags for collectors?
It happens. Non business strike coins usually find there way into circulation by chance. For instance, a collector dies and the family is unaware. Cashed in at the bank. Or a proof isn’t stored properly and becomes a blemished coin. Not much of a market for blems. They get spent. Collectors then find them in circulation.
Yes. They buy them at face value or just above face value (I really have no idea and I am not going to look it up), so spending them (thus putting them into circulation) is no big deal. Now proof coins bought from the mint that end up in circulation usually do so via a different route!
The mint website sells many coins in rolls and bags. What purchasers do with them is up to them. But intentionally putting them into circulation would get expensive.
I'm wrong...there is quite a premium to buy business strike coins from the mint. Currently a bag of 200 2023 half dollars will cost you about $150. Face is $100. Stupid dog.
