I just bought some mercury dimes and a few of them have rust. Would it be ok to put them away together in storage or should I try to clean the rust first? If I should clean them, how exactly would i do so? Also these coins are just junk silver.
I don't believe it is rust if they are mercury dimes, they were made of silver so they would have toning or dirt on them. I would never advise cleaning coins, although others will advise you perhaps, I guess there are safe methods, but I have never cleaned a coin. You could look for key dates as they are worth something, after that just put them away as they are because they are silver scrap.
Looks like staining, gunk, glue. Mercs are silver and copper. Sometimes the copper can migrate and cause verdigris but not rust. You need iron for rust that's why steel pennies are so suseptible to it
As the one date I can see is a simple late date mercury and I assume the other one is too and are just bullion. Really all you need to do is boil some water add some baking soda to it and dissolve then add a few pieces of shredded tinfoil then the coins. Let them sit for a minute of so then remove and rinse well with water and dry. You can google the entire process to get the exact details but it works well on junk silver.
It looks more like dirt or some other kind of debris on the coin. Silver coins don't "rust" in the conventional sense. "Rust" as most people know it is iron oxide...since the coins contain no iron they can't "rust." That said, the coins can oxidize and change color (we call it toning). But, in my opinion, these coins have some kind of debris on them.
Was watching some metal detecting vids on YT, and the guy was pulling up good date early Lincolns and IHP's. He then proceeded to clean them with a wire brush. I told him that makes a $10 coin into a 1 cent coin, but he didn't care.
It's cringe inducing to watch it. First you are seeing these nice early date Lincolns. (etc.) And then he's like let's clean these up. It's like a horror movie.
Strangely, any junk silver coins I have get good treatment even if they are not worth anything. I consider them to be pieces of history under my care for a while. It makes me cringe to think of cleaning them with a wire brush lol. Perhaps I take the hobby too seriously.
Just wondering if anyone could give me some info on a ten cent dime I have encountered.. it has rust on the both sides and where the blue nose is rite in the mid top of sail here is a rainbow like shine to it and o the reverse where the rust is worse it looks like there was extra silver added over the queens face and you can feel it sticking out of the coin a lot I heard there is some worth with some defected coins
I have so many questions. (1) It has rust? You didn't even read this thread, did you? (2) Blue nose? Please point out the blue nose to me. (3) Queen's face? Which Queen is pictured on your dime? (4) Defected coins? Please define defected.
2. I believe she is referring to a Canadian dime. The ship on the back is called the Bluenose. 3. ditto
Simple question if i may. What About alittle spit and a few finger rubs. Will that be coincided a damaging coin metdod.
