I am wondering where I can get rolls of half dollars. I checked TD bank but they said they only order cents, nickels, dimes, quarters and small dollars. I have read on this forum about people searching through rolls of halves so I thought I would give it a try, but I don't know where to get them from. Is there a certain bank that carries them? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
You'll have to ask around at different banks. You might have to pay a premium to cover their handling costs, too.
The first time I asked at Chase Bank for halves they offered to order boxes for me. I don't even ask them to re-order anymore they just know I'm coming and have my next batch every week, just picked up today. B of A did it too for a while but after a few months they wanted a service charge. Wells Fargo is a good choice too. They will all require you to have an account with them though. I have absolutely no problem finding halves, but I'd really like to know where can one still get Eisenhowers?
I heard if you live in a city with a Federal Reserve Bank (San Francisco) you can sometimes get bags of Ike dollars. Don't know if it is true.
Find a friendly vault teller. Though it is against the bank's policy to special order coins - but I have some tellers that make it happen for a small favour, a box of candy, tickets, gift cards etc.
I called wells Fargo earlier today to see if they had some half dollars and they said they had some. I got about 60 dollars worth. When I got home and unwrapped them and I found a strange off colored half dollar. It has sort of a gold color. It also appears to be counter stamped right above in god we trust. it doesn't have a copper-clad edge either, it is gold colored.
Looks like it was some outside the mint commemorative project that they sold on TV or Reader's Digest for too much money. It probably is layered in low fineness gold plating.
If you have a Casino near you look there for rolls of half dollars. They have them in the racks. I advise not to gamble too much and waste your money though.
Casino half dollars are among the most beat-up, sorry looking coins out there. In my opinion stay far away from them.
I now live in a city with a Fed branch. Anyone have experience with this? I'd be surprised if I could just go up to a teller and ask for coin, like a normal bank. Guess I can try. Gotta pay for parking though.
I went to the Chase bank today and asked them if they ever get rolls of half dollars. They reached into a draw and pulled out 2 rolls for me. I found one 40% Silver Kennedy half dollar. So now you know where to go.
In my experience, Wells Fargo seems to be the best in terms of being customer friendly... they will order half dollars for you most of the time... BofA is far and away the worst - they don't seem to like dealing with any sort of coins, most especially half dollars.
Just check around banks or credit unions. My CU has half dollars when I asked about Eisenhowers they directed me to a Coin Shop.
