A question for the Canadian users on the board: do you search rolls at Canadian banks? I have only heard stories from Americans. I have only been to American banks and ask for half dollars, occasionally finding silver. Do Canadian banks also have rolls of halves (I know this denomination also isn't widely used there). Also, do they typically have rolls of the pre-Loonie dollar coins? What have you found in these rolls? I'm curious because I'm going to Canada in a few months.
That is really a good question and I'm not Canadian nor am I going there anytime soon. Gonna watch this thread though.
Well, lets see.. lol um no none of the pre 87 Dollars ( big silver ones(Voyageur)) the half dollars are near impossible to find. The tellers at my searching bank are keeping their eyes open for me, but they said it will be hard to keep them for me, because lots of the girls that work the cash also collect the older stuff. And yes, We do roll search. I do about a hundred a week in cents. I've been trying to go and get a roll of new halves from the bank, just to use in circulation. tips, and small change purchases but I cant get in on the week days, and the vault is closed on weekends. But those Older halves do come in every now and then, and usually they are swiped right away. Enjoy your trip! - shawn
You can get halves every once and a while, but they are very rarely silver. I have found a lot of old nickles/pennies. A couple '68 quarter and dime's also.
Well I usually have to pay extra for the silver 50 cent pieces, all I have found is a 1944. The 68's are only half silver.
Oh no. This is all so discouraging. I was thinking that because Canada kept silver in its coins longer than the U.S. (albeit in gradually lower and lower amounts), that there would be a greater chance of finding silver halves in rolls. Regardless, I have very few Canadian coins and I want to get as many different years as possible. So whatever I find will most likely be useful for me.
The silver halves are larger in diameter than the post-silver halves, so you'll never find them mixed, unfortunately. Also, the halves were only produced for mint sets and rolls for collectors for the last several years, it's next to impossible to get them at banks unless someone else has turned them in. Trust me, I visit two different banks (not just different branches of the same bank) every week, and have managed about 4 halves in the last year and a half. The bst coins to search are cents and nickels as you can still find some older ones, and the occasional variety. (Such as the 1985 pointed 5). Silver can still be found in the dimes and quarters, but the percentage is awfully small, and the only silver quarter I've gotten was in the change drawer at work, while I have managed to score about 8 silver dimes with only occasional roll searches.
Is it possible, if you get to know your tellers well enough, to ask them to order you boxes of halves and Voyageur dollars? In the U.S., most banks can order boxes of halves and Eisenhower dollars.
Like their 50 cent pieces, Canadian dollar coins have a different diameter if they're silver so they can't be rolled together.
definitly not, at least not with the voyageurs. And I have tried with the halves, and they never have them in stock. Bt... can you imagine teh price of a box of halves? kinda expensive I'd say. Im pretty sure the only way to get them is to visit the mint and buy rolls from tehre. Im in the precess of getting my sisters boyfriends uncle to get some for me, cause he lives a lot closer to the mint than I do :goofer:
That sucks that they changed the diameter. I wonder what happened to all the nickel Voyageur dollars. Did they melt a lot of them down?
I've tried through two different banks (not just two branches), and neither can even order the halves from their armoured car services. I was even willing to buy an entire box and slowly distribute them into the public like many of you down south, but no luck.
You find them in dealer junk bins for above face at circulated grades. I'd be willing to put a set together for face if I could, but that's not happening, either. I just keep my eyes peeled for a deal every now and then, so I've got some duplicates, but I've got even more holes.
This is an interesting thread. I work part-time at a grocery store, and a few months back, someone actually paid part of their bill with a 68 voyager silver dollar. I don't know what the hell they were thinking, but I certainly kept my mouth shut about it. It's not in bad shape either.
Scratch that I just read up and realize now that the from 68 onward, it was struck in Nickel. So, not so remarkable. Still, it's the first time in all my customer service jobs that I've been paid by a silver dollar, so I'm still glad to have it.
I am aware of the '85 pointed 5. What are some other cent varieties you search for? Do you know of a link with a list and possibly photos?
Hey Car10, I've thought about this myself from time to time. Here's one link I have that has a good history of the canadian cent and varieties intermixed with what he's selling: http://www.calgarycoin.com/modern/cdcent.htm For Elizabeth II the varieties seem to be 1953/4 strap / no strap 1965 small / large bead, pointed / blunt 5 1985 pointed / blunt 5. I am unaware of any doubled dies known for the series.
Anyone do any Canadian quarter roll searching? I've been thinking about doing a little roll searching myself, and the only one that really appeals to me out of what's available, are quarters. Primarily I'd be looking for silver and those ellusive 67 lynx quarters.
Re: Cent varieties to look for (including those mentioned above); First off, I keep anything pre-QEII, and I can usually score a few GVI cents in every box, so I'll include those in this list as well. GVI 1947ML (maple leaf) - high/low ML, blunt/pointed 7 (4 varieties total) 1948 high/low relief 1949 high/low relief (high is worth a significant premium) QEII 1953 - SF/NSF (shoulder fold, no shoulder fold) 1954 - SF/NSF (NSF in PL only, but worth a lot!) 1955 - SF/NSF (NSF worth a lot even in VF), SF also has long/short denticle varieties 1957 - high/hanging 7 (hanging 7 caused by dies crashing into each other with no slug in place, worth a bit more in MS 1960 - narrow/wide rim, narrow only worth a significant amount more in MS-64 1961 - G/MG (designer's intials) - G gets to be worth a bit more in higher grades 1962 - MG/G/"harp"/"guitar" - worth slightly more for each variety 1964 - normal/extra spine (only 5 reported so far - good luck!) 1965 - small/large beads, blunt/pointed 5 (total 4 varieties). The SBB5 also has an "extra spine" variety 1979 - normal/double punched date. (Double punched worth a bit in MS states) 1983 - near/far dots (around the rim) 1985 - blunt/pointed 5 - (I found 2 pointed 5's in two years of searching, but they were 3 weeks apart! LOL) then of course there are the P/no-P varieties from 1999 to 2006., and RCM logo mintmarks in 2006. 1999P and 2002P are the harder ones to find, and 2006RCM comes in magnetic and non-magnetic varieties. I wish I had pics for all of these for you. I'll see what I can come up with. Aslanmia - I've only found one silver quarter in two years, and that was in the cash drawer at work. (I was the one who took it in payment from the customer.) I've had better success searching dimes, which I've only done casually, and yet come up with 8 silver dimes in two years (7 different dates, too!)
