Graded by NGC as MS-65 Red. This is a post 1981 as it's zinc. QQ first 2 photos are the obverse but this is a reverse cap Die error. The 3rd photo is obviously the reverse. The last photo shows a shadow image of Lincoln with the Memorial is in the 12-6 o'clock position on the left side. Also notice that the coin itself is quite bowl shaped. If Cherrios were smaller you can eat them out of this coin.
When a Cent is struck it can get stuck on the face of the Die. After a few strikes more it becomes detached. But there are a few more things happening. And no.. Its not a mint employee doing it so they can sneak it out to sell it.
Very nice reverse die cap, @Collecting Nut. I like it has the Red color. My reverse cap is on a 2007 dime.
Agree, one side of the coin is unfortunately gone. However, we are getting a pretty cool cap or bowl shape piece.
Error Ref: Reverse Die Cap (Anvil Die Cap in most years) Definition: This error develops when a newly-struck coin adheres to the anvil die. The anvil, or bottom die, functioned as the reverse die through most of the Mint’s history, with the exception of such issues as the Winged Liberty or “Mercury” dime and the Indian Head or “Buffalo” nickel. Beginning in 1992, there was a gradual changeover to a setup in which the obverse die functioned as the anvil die. However, most or all anvil die caps from this year on were still produced in presses in which the reverse die was the anvil die. Therefore, it is perfectly acceptable to refer to these errors as reverse die caps. Most reverse die caps are struck out-of-collar and take the form of enormously expanded broadstrikes. The first planchet struck after formation of the cap will be left with a clear, complete brockage of the obverse design on the reverse face. Subsequent brockages will be increasingly expanded, distorted, and incomplete.
I would think the cap would cup toward the hammer die due to hitting the collar repeatedly. For the coin to cup around the anvil die the collar would have to be stuck out of the way or completely gone.
