I'm looking for any info about this silver bullion round. I was only able to find 1 other example online but just a pic. The round has a HUGE mistake on the reverse. 1832-1982 for the 250th anniversary of his birth. LOL someone wasn't paying attention. Wikipedia had minimal info about the mint. Any thoughts???
I'd say it's worth about it's weight in silver. From what I've been reading, Rarities Mint became the official producer for Disney coins from 1987-1995. The Disney coins maintain some collectability due to being Disney. They, at least, appear to have been designed with some care. I don't find that Washington round to be attractive at all, and the date being wrong shows how little care went into it's manufacture. Interestingly, It appears that man who operated Rarities Mint, Ian Simpson, has moved on to other business ventures. This time he is involved in mineral water, Lithia mineral water. Apparently, the FDA has "determined that your “Lithia” product is being promoted for conditions that cause it to be a drug as defined by section 201(g)(1)(B) of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (the Act) [21 U.S.C. 321(g)(1)(B)] because it is intended for use in the diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease."
Thanks for the reply Pat. I was thinking spot as well. It's a really cool bullion round though. It's got a lot of weird/fake details. Obviously wasn't made in 1982 since the company didn't start until 87, the dating is off by a century(seriously! Who missed that?), commissioned by Disney (probably not this round but lots of their others), and the owner went on to make drug water... lol This is my new favorite round!!!
I'd assume the coin was made before the Disney Contract. Just we only have information about the Disney years of Mr. Simpson's endeavor. I'm glad you enjoy it. It goes to show that monetary worth isn't the only value in a coin. Who knows, maybe (big maybe) someday it will gain more desirability with Disney or oddball collectors. Weider things have been known to happen. The unofficial Liberty dollar has gained some prominence with collectors, as-well-as Tulving slabbed coins, more for the history than their rarity or beauty. and... that website is pretty darn good... gotta wonder about the people who are still trying to use holistic medicine. It's like they never heard of the scientific process. I think this was my favorite picture:
