I am not familiar with this coin. The photo of the reverse is out of focus. The obverse surfaces appear to be grainy which could be an indication the coin is cast (and counterfeit). The best approach would be to compare the coin to a genuine example.

I've got 4 or 5 nazi coins, but none look like that...

    hamman88 Spare some change, sir?

Notice that both coins appear grainy.

That could explain the granular surfaces.

Since we`re talking about nazi coins, could someone please check the book value for a 1937 2 reichsmark? I got several from different mints marks (A/F/D/J). Since i`m not interested, i got an opportunity to exchange them for coins i need. In order to know what can i get for them, i`d really appreciate book prices for this coin, AU to BU grades.

On eBay i managed to find the cheapest going for ~6 USD, in average they go for 13-16 USD. Are buyers overpaying for swastika souvenirs or those prices are reasonable?

I think it is real. It is lightly circulated and unfortunately suffers from some corrosion (not unusual with zinc coins.) It is a military occupation issue and is listed in the 37th edition of the Standard Catalog on page 863 as KM 98. They were only struck in 1940 and 41. The 1940 comes from all seven of the German mints while the 1941 only comes from two A and F The only issue that would be considered common is the 1940 A which is the one you have. In XF it lists for $30. An Unc lists for $60. The next most common is the 1940 D which lists at $75 and $120 respectively. The rest of the issues are considerably higher.

Just out of curiosity, why would you be said if you payed $50 for a $1000 coin?

I concur. Not very rare, but military issue indeed more rarer than others. Even with the corrosion, given that it is a zinc, I believe it's an above average grade.

I concur with Conder101, The site listing it over $1,000.00 would either have a rarer year/mint mark than you and in much better condition, or he is just putting a crazy price on a coin, it happens very often.

At an auction I went to a couple weeks ago, I watched a well worn 5 mark nazi coin go for close to $90, when I saw the same coin other places for less than $20. Amazing.

I possess quite a few 5 mark specimens of that era. I paid less than $20 each for all of them, and none are that worn.

There's one guy on ebay that sells Nazi coins all the time, and he always gets top dollar for them.

Indeed. Though I suspect, as with other specimens on ebay that have a 'hoopla' factor, exaggerated prices are realized.

I think this is another example of the extreme dangers of people trying to price off of the internet. I get it all the time, people not paying attention to grade or date/mintmarks and thinking they have a fortune. One lady had a VG 1892s that she was convinced would buy her a new house since she saw one on the internet was worth a ton, (something like an MS66 or something). I tried convincing her that one was MUCH higher grade, and she told me "grade cannot matter that much, it has to be a rare coin and you are lying to me".

    Genuine Indeed

This thread has explained this coin type well. The German catalogue numbers for the Reichskreditkassen coins are Jaeger 618 for the 5 Rpf and Jaeger 619 for the 10 rpf. You can see links to examples of both coins at http://www.luckylukeonline.com/scarce.html To date, all examples of these coins that I have collected are 1940 A. The other mintmarks do indeed exist but as noted, they have a steep price tag attached. Happy collecting and good fortune!

Taxidermist, the 2 RM 1936-1939 coins go for about $6-$9. Those who pay $13-16 are either WWII-collectible bidders (they don't know what the price should be) or are newbies. UNLESS that 2 RM is XF+, AU, UNC and just absolutely gorgeous in some way, it should not be approaching $13-16. I've sold about 6 in the past week and got $7-8 for each of them, as I expected.

Thanks, Rhino89, you have confirmed the info i`ve found during the months that passed since i asked that question. I got coins that look AU+/UNC, hopefully they`ll go for at least $10-12.

Haha totally didn't notice this thread was that old. I see someone brought it back... oh well.
