Ok, I got this coin for a shop recently and I got some good pics of it, I think I found something odd about it. TEST your knowledge, identify this coin, I could just be a normal penny... I already got it back from PCGS... so give your opinions then I will reveal the given grade... etc... Let Me See Who Gets it right.....
not sure what to say .. its a cent a lincoln cent a 1960 small date cent ... it has a happy trail going up the reverse memorial steps, with somethign sitting there, possibly resting. the '0' on the date looks funky... a little 'comething' above the mm.... Mr Lincoln has a possible war scar from his ear to beard ... and what is that below the eyeball ?? im guessing its a cent ... do i win
This looks to me to have a combination large and small date. the "19" looks to be from the small date variety while the "60" looks to be from the large date variety.
OK, to be more precise, it's a repunched Small Date over Large Date, plus a repunched Mint Mark. Cherrypicker's guide, fifth edition, volume 1, page 132
I know this isn't what you wanted - but this is how I would fully ID it. And it made me laugh. Anonymous AE/ZI - cent, 19mm Denver, 1960 AD Lincoln, bearded, in suit w/ bowtie r. IN GOD WE TRUST above, LIBERTY to l., 1960 to r. with D below Lincoln in dodecastyle temple UNITED STATES oF AMERICA at top, above, E PLURIBUS UNUM, ONE CENT below Redbook p118, 2006
David, I'm no error expert, and correct me if I am wrong, but on a Doubled Die from that era isn't the doubling evident in places EXCEPT the mintmark. I say this because the doubling occurs during the hubbing process. Back then the mintmark was added to the die by hand after the doubling had already occurred.
I'm far from an expert myself but I learn from others who presumably know what they're talking about. Therefore, when I looked in the Cherrypicker's guide, fifth edition, volume 1, page 132 and saw this exact coin, I posted what they described the coin to be. Apparently it was a repunched date, small over large, PLUS a repunched and offset mint mark.
I finally picked up my copy of CPG and read the description. They call it a DDO and say "The doubling is evident as a Small Date Over Large Date." Now that I think about it I recall reading about this DDO. There were two different hubs used to make the 1960 Cent obverse dies. One had the Large Date and one had the Small Date. A die was made using both hubs (apparently the Small Date hub last) creating the 'Small Date Over Large Date' variety. On top of that the guy punching in the 'D' mintmark botched the job and created an RPM in addition to the DDO. What are the odds? Very cool variety.
