Question about 1883 Liberty V Nickel w/ die cracks on Obv and Rev and possible Interior Die Break?

Discussion in 'Error Coins' started by Mitchell Wright, Apr 19, 2019.

  1. I picked this up recently and think it has the following:

    1. Die crack on obverse starting above Liberty's head and splitting off around 1:00
    2. Die crack on reverse between 1:00 - 2:00
    3. Interior die break on Liberty's neck just above the 1 in the date.
Does it look right? I can't find these 'retained cuds' or die cracks on the cuds on coins site, and the site doesn't list any interior die breaks. The raised area on the neck looks like a CUD but on a device, so I'm assuming that means an "interior" die break.

    Thanks for your comments. IMG_7991.jpg IMG_7992.jpg IMG_7993.jpg

These die cracks are fairly common
on Liberty Nickels. Neither one is
    a retained cud die crack.

The area around the neck appears to be a
possible planchet flaw, not a die crack.

(the coin appears to be cleaned/wiped)

  4. Here is a close up of the neck area. Thanks for your help.

All three photos of that area look different. ?

First two look like surface flaws, and the last
one looks like a small die chip. In any case,
it's not a significant error on the coin, imo.

    See you all on Monday.

  6. Thank you Fred. Photo 3 is more representative of the area, it sits above the neck, similar to what I’ve read about a die chip. Thanks for your help!
