Hello coin collector forum, Which best choose proof set clad vs silver? Thank you for stop look:thumb:
Both are great. If you have to choose between them, the silver usually has lower mintage, the coins typically look better, and it always has better metal value (which is why it will cost you more from the US Mint). TC
When I was a teenager in the early '70s, I would buy five (5) clad proof sets from the Mint each year...what a waste of money! I stick to the silver sets now. I'll get one (1) clad set to bust up for album coins, but that's it.
Somehow I get the feeling that "money" may be an issue here? The silver sets are indeed more expensive than the clad coins. Young collectors will feel intimidated to the point that they must purchase the highest quality and value in a proof set. Do not allow this logic to get in the way and deter you from collecting what you like and enjoy. Clad sets are wonderful objects to collect and if the "budget" allows, pick up the silver one too. Don't ever let anyone make you feel that you are diminished in your collecting endeavors because you only purchased a "clad" and not a "silver". "Old guys" collect the silver sets. "Old guys" typically have more money at their disposal. Not to worry "young one". You will one day be an "old guy" too......:smile
Don't ya wish you had bought 5 clad sets in 2008? 2001? 1999? I know, hindsight is 20/20, but I say collect what you like. Be it silver, clad, or proof coins in general (both).
I prefer silver, for many reasons but the top 3 are the way it looks, the way it feels and the way it sounds. You can't get a better looking vintage dime than pre-64, JMHO.
I hate to get off topic but am I missing something here? Is there someting special about those 99, 01, & 08 proof sets? I see them all over ebay for like $12 to $15 bucks a set.
For a long time they did bring a nice markup over issue price. Today they are following the normal pattern for US Mint material and falling rapidly down to issue price or less. In the future they will probably be just so much "junk". You needed to buy the sets and then sell them off while they were high. Then later buy a set back for less than issue after the fall.
Well, actually book value on these is quite higher. 1999 goes for about $35 2001 is around $75 2008 goes for about $85 And that's just for the clad proof sets.
Book value doesn't mean much. Go by what they are actually selling for 1999 clad set has a buy it now on ebay right now for $13. Looking at completed sales I see a $17.50, a $6.50 with $5 shipping, $10 with $2.88 shipping. 2001 set In completed I see $13.50 with $5 shipping, $14.14 with $2 shipping, and $15 with $2 shipping 2008 set In completed I see $49 with $5 shipping, $50 with $5 shipping, $56 free shipping. Well below the book price and this is a set only two years old. I expect it to continue going down in the future, but it may take awhile. Over all the book price for the three sets is $195, but they can be purchased for $86 including shipping. Notice the 1999 and 2001 sets listed above are below the issue price of $19.95.
Well, I didn't discuss or dispute actual selling prices, I was just pointing out to the person who asked why someone else brought these particular years up.
Proof sets between 58-70 are reasonably priced. Often times you'll only be paying the melt value on these silver sets. I buy the 58-60's all the time and spend at the most $30. Proof set + silver= best of both worlds! Collect what interests you the most, one thing will grab your attention over the other.
